Sri Lanka has been famous for its sapphires for more than two thousand years, and many travellers dream of taking one home. It can be a wonderful souvenir, as long as you know what to look for. Here's a clear, honest guide from a family that works in the gem trade.
Why Ceylon sapphires are special
Sri Lankan sapphires are known for their bright, lively blue, often lighter and more vivid than stones from some other sources. The gem town of Ratnapura, whose name means 'city of gems', has been at the heart of the trade for centuries, and some of the world's most famous sapphires came from the island.
The shades of blue
Royal blue is deep and velvety, and the most sought-after. Cornflower blue is soft and medium. Ceylon blue is bright and lively. Violet-blue has a hint of purple, pastel blues are light and fresh, and star sapphires show a six-rayed star under a single light. Sri Lanka also produces rare colour-change sapphires.
Heated or unheated?
Heating is a long-established treatment that can improve a sapphire's colour and clarity, and many sapphires on the market are heated. Unheated stones with fine colour are rarer and usually more valuable. Neither is 'wrong'. What matters is that you know which one you're buying, and that the seller tells you honestly.
Always ask for a certificate
A gemstone certificate (identification report) records what the stone is, its weight, measurements, shape, colour and treatment information. Check that the details match the stone in front of you. Every sapphire we sell comes with one.
How to avoid gem scams
- Be cautious of friendly strangers, tuk-tuk drivers or 'students' who offer to take you to a special gem shop or export deal.
- Never buy a stone on the promise that you can resell it at a profit at home.
- Look at stones in daylight as well as under shop lights.
- Take your time; good sellers never pressure you.
- Get a written receipt describing the stone and the price.
Buying during your trip, or from home
