Sri Lanka Safari Guide: Parks, Wildlife & Tours

Sri Lanka is one of the best places in Asia for wildlife watching, with elephants, leopards, sloth bears, crocodiles and hundreds of bird species in a small area. This guide helps you choose a park and plan responsibly.

The main parks

Yala: variety and leopards, but busy. Udawalawe: reliable elephants in open country. Wilpattu: large, quiet and forested. Minneriya and Kaudulla: the seasonal elephant gathering. Sinharaja: rainforest and endemic birds on foot.

Seasons

Parks are open for most of the year, but conditions change with rainfall. Parts of Yala have traditionally closed for a period in the late dry season, and the Minneriya gathering peaks in the later dry season. Always check current information.

Responsible viewing

Ask your driver to keep a respectful distance, avoid crowding sightings and never feed animals. A good safari is quiet and patient.

What you might see

Sri Lankan elephants, leopards, sloth bears, spotted and sambar deer, water buffalo, wild boar, mugger and saltwater crocodiles, monitor lizards, and a huge variety of birds, from peacocks and painted storks to endemic species such as the Sri Lanka junglefowl. Sightings depend on season, time of day and luck.

What to bring on safari

  • Binoculars and a camera with a zoom lens
  • Hat, sunglasses and sunscreen
  • A light layer for early mornings
  • Water and snacks (take all rubbish out)
  • Neutral-coloured clothing

Choosing a park for your route

If you are in the Cultural Triangle, Minneriya, Kaudulla or Hurulu Eco Park are the closest. Udawalawe fits the drive from the hill country to the south coast, and Yala suits a night near Tissamaharama. Wilpattu works from Negombo or Anuradhapura, and Kumana from Arugam Bay.

With a week or more, choosing two different parks gives you the best overall experience.

Half-day or full-day?

Half-day safaris of three to four hours are enough for most travellers, especially in open parks like Udawalawe and Minneriya. Full-day safaris let you go deeper into large parks such as Yala and Wilpattu, and suit keen wildlife watchers and photographers. Bring food, water and patience.
