Where to See Elephants in Sri Lanka (Ethically)

Sri Lanka is one of the best places in Asia to see wild elephants, sometimes in herds of dozens. The best experiences are in national parks, watching them behave naturally from a jeep. Here's where and when to go.

Udawalawe: elephants all year

Udawalawe's open grasslands around a large reservoir make elephants easy to see in any month, often in family groups. It's ideal for families and fits neatly between the hill country and the south coast. Next door, the Elephant Transit Home cares for orphans before releasing them back to the wild.

Minneriya and Kaudulla: the Gathering

In the dry months, roughly July to October, elephants converge on the grasslands around the ancient Minneriya and Kaudulla reservoirs, sometimes in very large numbers. Drivers track which park the herds are using. Both are close to Sigiriya.

Yala and Wilpattu

Yala is famous for leopards, but elephants are common too, along with sloth bears and crocodiles. Wilpattu, larger and quieter, has elephants among its forests and lakes.

What to avoid

Avoid elephant rides, places where elephants are chained or perform, and 'bathing' experiences with captive animals. Choose wild encounters in national parks instead, with drivers who keep a respectful distance and switch off engines when watching.

Safari tips

  • Morning and late afternoon are the best times.
  • Bring binoculars, a hat, water and a camera with a zoom.
  • Stay in the vehicle and keep quiet near animals.
  • Sightings are never guaranteed, but elephants are seen on most drives in the right park and season.
