Sigiriya
A fifth-century palace on top of a granite rock, with frescoes, water gardens and a view across the forest.
Sample itinerary
A first-timer's week that touches the island's essentials: the rock fortress of Sigiriya, sacred Kandy, the cool tea country and a final stretch of coast. This is a suggested sample itinerary; we adjust it to your dates, season and pace.
Meet your driver at the airport and head inland towards Sigiriya or Dambulla.
Climb Sigiriya early, then visit the Dambulla cave temple. Optional afternoon elephant safari in season.
Travel south to Kandy, with an optional spice garden stop. Evening visit to the Temple of the Tooth.
Drive up into the hills to Nuwara Eliya, visiting a tea estate on the way.
Take the train from Nanu Oya to Ella when the line is running and seats are available (your driver brings the luggage by road), then explore Nine Arch Bridge.
Descend through the hills, with an optional safari at Udawalawe or Yala on the way to the coast.
Seven days is short for Sri Lanka, so this route focuses on the island's centre and avoids long transfers. You see the Cultural Triangle at its best, with Sigiriya, Dambulla and an optional elephant safari. Then you move up through Kandy into the tea country and Ella, and finish on the south coast at Galle.
It gives you a taste of history, nature and the coast without spending most of the week in the car.
If you prefer beaches, cut the hill country short and spend more time on the coast. If you love culture, add Polonnaruwa or Anuradhapura and finish in Kandy. With a family, we can shorten driving days and add a calm beach.
While the Kandy–Nanu Oya railway is closed, we drive that section and include the train ride from Nanu Oya to Ella if you'd like it.
The route suits most of the year. The south coast is at its best from roughly December to March, while the Cultural Triangle is generally dry for much of the year. In the south-west monsoon, from about May to September, we can swap the south coast for the east coast.
You travel in our own air-conditioned vehicle with one driver for the whole trip, so there is no sharing with strangers and no fixed schedule. Your driver collects you from the airport or your hotel, takes you between places, waits while you visit and helps with local advice along the way.
Before you travel, we agree the route and the hotels with you, and confirm what is included in writing. During the trip, small changes such as an extra stop, a slower morning or a different restaurant are easy to make.
Final inclusions are confirmed in writing with your quote.
