Things to do

Sri Lanka Beaches

Sri Lanka has beaches on every side, but its monsoons mean the best coast depends on the month. In broad terms the south and west are calmer from around November or December to April, and the east from around April or May to September.

South and west coast

Mirissa, Unawatuna, Weligama, Hikkaduwa and Bentota are the classic beach stops, close to Galle Fort and easy to reach from Colombo. They suit a beach finish to a winter-season tour.

East coast

Trincomalee, Nilaveli, Pasikuda and Arugam Bay come into their own in the middle of the year, when the south-west is wetter. They are often quieter and pair well with the Cultural Triangle.

Swimming safely

Currents can be strong even on beautiful days. Swim where locals swim, follow flags where they exist, and take advice from your hotel.

Our favourite beaches

On the south coast, we like Mirissa for its atmosphere and whales, Unawatuna for calm swimming, Tangalle for space and quiet, and Weligama for learning to surf. On the east coast, Nilaveli and Pasikuda for calm turquoise water, and Arugam Bay for surf. On the west coast, Bentota is good for river trips and resort stays.

Beach etiquette

Topless sunbathing is not acceptable in Sri Lanka. Cover up when you leave the beach, and be respectful near temples and fishing communities.

Beach seasons explained

Two monsoons shape Sri Lanka's beaches. The south-west monsoon, from roughly May to September, brings rain and rough seas to the south and west coasts, so the east coast is at its best. The north-east monsoon, from roughly November to February, brings rain to the east, while the south and west are dry, sunny and calm.

Between the monsoons, in April and October to November, showers are possible anywhere. The pattern varies from year to year, but it means that at almost any time of year, one coast is in season.

Things to do beyond swimming

  • Whale-watching from Mirissa (about November to April) or Trincomalee (about March to August)
  • Snorkelling at Pigeon Island, Unawatuna or Hikkaduwa in calm conditions
  • Surf lessons at Weligama or Arugam Bay in season
  • River and mangrove trips at Bentota and Negombo
  • Sunset at Galle Fort's ramparts
  • Turtle-watching at responsible hatcheries or on the beach at Hikkaduwa
