North-West Coast
Kalpitiya is a long, sandy peninsula on the north-west coast, with a shallow lagoon on one side and the open sea on the other. Its strong seasonal winds make it Sri Lanka's kitesurfing centre.
Flat-water lagoons are excellent for learning to kite, while experienced riders head to open-sea spots.
Boat trips may bring sightings of dolphins in season, and the area is quiet and undeveloped.
Lessons and rentals from kite camps along the lagoon.
Seasonal boat trips offshore; sightings are never guaranteed.
Fishing villages, mangroves and birdlife.
Kalpitiya is a long, narrow peninsula on the north-west coast, between a large lagoon and the sea. It is remote, windy and relaxed, with fishing villages, sand dunes and empty beaches.
The steady winds make it one of the best places in South Asia for kitesurfing, and the waters offshore are known for dolphins.
The flat water of the lagoon is ideal for learning, and there are several kite schools along the peninsula. The windiest months are roughly May to October, with a shorter second season around December to March. Conditions vary, so check with schools before booking.
Boat trips go out to see spinner dolphins, sometimes in large pods, mostly from roughly November to April. Bar Reef, offshore, is a marine sanctuary with coral and reef fish.
Choose operators who keep a respectful distance and do not chase the animals.
Kalpitiya is a few hours north of Negombo and close to Wilpattu National Park, so it pairs well with a safari. It can also add a beach stop on the way to Anuradhapura.
Check current details before travelling: prices, opening hours, access and seasonal conditions change.
