Best Waterfalls in Sri Lanka: Places to Visit

Sri Lanka's hill country is laced with waterfalls, from roadside cascades to tall plunges at the edge of the highlands. Most are at their fullest after rain.

Diyaluma Falls

One of the tallest in Sri Lanka, with natural pools above the drop reached on foot.

Around Ella

Ravana Falls is beside the road south of Ella; other smaller falls lie on walking routes nearby.

Horton Plains and Nuwara Eliya

Baker's Falls lies on the World's End trail, and several falls are visible on the roads through tea country.

Staying safe

Rocks around waterfalls are slippery and water levels can rise quickly after rain upstream. Never swim near the edge of a drop and follow local advice.

When waterfalls are at their best

Waterfalls are fullest during and just after the rainy seasons. In the hill country that is usually during the south-west monsoon, from about May to September, and again around October and November. In long dry spells some falls slow to a trickle. Pools can be dangerous after heavy rain, so always follow local advice.

More waterfalls worth seeing

  • Bambarakanda, often described as the island's tallest, near Kalupahana
  • Ravana Falls, by the roadside below Ella
  • Baker's Falls, on the Horton Plains loop
  • St Clair's and Devon Falls, seen from the road between Hatton and Talawakele
  • Ramboda Falls, near the road from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya

Photographing waterfalls

Waterfalls are best photographed in soft light, early in the morning or on cloudy days, when there is less contrast. A tripod or a steady surface lets you use a slower shutter speed for silky water. Watch your footing on wet rocks, and keep cameras and phones away from spray.

A waterfall-themed route

Drive from Kandy towards Nuwara Eliya past Ramboda Falls, see St Clair's and Devon Falls near Talawakele, walk to Baker's Falls on Horton Plains, visit Ravana Falls below Ella, and swim in Diyaluma's upper pools. Many of these fit naturally into the hill-country leg of a tour.
