Best Hiking Trails in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka's best walks are in the hill country and its forests. Many are short and suit casual walkers; a few, like Adam's Peak, are serious undertakings.

Easy

Little Adam's Peak and Nine Arch Bridge near Ella; lakeside paths in Kandy and Nuwara Eliya.

Moderate

The World's End loop at Horton Plains, Ella Rock and guided rainforest trails in Sinharaja.

Challenging

The night climb of Adam's Peak for sunrise, and longer treks in the Knuckles range with a guide.

Tips

Start early, carry water and a rain layer, and use local guides on less-marked routes.

Best hikes at a glance

  • Little Adam's Peak, Ella: easy and short, with big views
  • Ella Rock: moderate, half day, a guide recommended
  • Pidurangala, near Sigiriya: short and steep, with a scramble at the end
  • World's End, Horton Plains: moderate loop on a good path
  • Knuckles Mountain Range: day hikes to multi-day treks with a guide
  • Adam's Peak: a challenging night climb for sunrise in season

When to hike

The hill country is usually clearest from about January to April. Start early wherever you hike, as clouds and showers often build in the afternoon. Carry water, sun protection and a light rain jacket, and expect leeches on forest trails after rain.

The Pekoe Trail

The Pekoe Trail is a long-distance walking route through the tea country, divided into stages that link estates, villages and towns such as Kandy, Hatton, Nuwara Eliya, Haputale and Ella. Individual stages make excellent day hikes, and our drivers can drop you at the start and collect you at the end.

Combining hikes into a route

A hill-country hiking week might include Pidurangala near Sigiriya, a Knuckles trek from Kandy, Horton Plains from Nuwara Eliya, Little Adam's Peak and Ella Rock in Ella, and Adam's Peak in season. We plan rest days and scenic drives between the big walks.
