Best Things to Do in Sri Lanka

Safaris, beaches, hikes, surf, tea country, temples and food: choose the experiences that matter most and we'll plan the route around them.

Scenic journeys

The hill-country railway winds through tea estates and forest, and is an experience in its own right. After Cyclone Ditwah, trains currently run between Nanu Oya, Ella and Badulla; we drive the closed sections and plan train rides where the line is open.

Plan by season

What's good when

Sri Lanka has two monsoons that affect opposite sides of the island, so there's always somewhere in season. Months are approximate and vary from year to year.

About December to March
South and west coast beaches, surfing around Weligama and Hikkaduwa, whale-watching from Mirissa, and clear mornings for hiking in the hill country. This is also the Adam's Peak pilgrimage season.
About April to September
East coast beaches around Trincomalee, Nilaveli and Pasikuda, surfing at Arugam Bay, and whale-watching off Trincomalee. The elephant gathering at Minneriya usually peaks in the later dry months.
All year
Ancient cities and temples, tea country, food and cooking classes and most safaris. Check park closures before you plan.

Check current details before travelling: prices, opening hours, access and seasonal conditions change.

Things to do: frequently asked questions

What is Sri Lanka best known for?

Ancient cities and cave temples, tea country and the scenic hill-country railway, wildlife safaris with elephants and leopards, whale-watching, and long palm-fringed beaches.

Can I do a safari and a beach on the same trip?

Yes. Yala and Udawalawe are close to the south coast, so many trips pair a safari with beach days around Mirissa, Tangalle or Galle.

Which activities need to be booked in advance?

Reserved train seats in busy months, popular cooking classes and some safari or whale-watching departures fill up first. We help arrange these once your route is confirmed.

Are these activities suitable for children?

Many are: safaris, short hikes, tea-factory visits, calm beaches and cooking classes. Rafting and some boat trips have minimum ages, which operators set.
