Travel guide

Canyoning in Sri Lanka

Quick answer

The best place for canyoning in Sri Lanka is Kitulgala, a rainforest village on the Kelani River, about two to two and a half hours from Colombo. With a guide, you follow a rocky stream down through the forest, sliding down smooth rocks, jumping into natural pools and abseiling down small waterfalls. A session usually lasts around two to three hours. You need to be reasonably fit and comfortable in water, and you wear a helmet and life jacket. It is often combined with white-water rafting on the same day.

Canyoning is one of Sri Lanka's most exciting outdoor adventures, and one of the least known. It takes you into hidden corners of the rainforest that you could never reach on a normal walk, with cool water, green forest and the sound of birds all around. This guide explains where to go, what happens on a trip, how fit you need to be and how to plan it.

What is canyoning?

Canyoning means travelling down a stream or river gorge on foot, following the water wherever it goes. Instead of walking around the obstacles, you go through them: you scramble over boulders, slide down natural rock chutes, jump into deep pools, swim through calm sections and abseil down waterfalls on a rope. A trained guide leads the group, chooses the safest route and sets up the ropes.

Some operators offer introductory routes, but difficulty, swimming requirements and techniques vary. Confirm the exact route, guide qualifications and suitability before booking.

Where to go canyoning in Sri Lanka

Kitulgala

Kitulgala is the home of canyoning in Sri Lanka. This small village sits in a lowland rainforest on the banks of the Kelani River, on the road from Colombo to the hill country. The streams that run down from the surrounding hills into the river create natural slides, pools and small waterfalls that are perfect for canyoning. Kitulgala is also Sri Lanka's best-known place for white-water rafting, so it is easy to combine the two.

Kitulgala is surrounded by forest that is home to many birds, butterflies and plants, and it is a lovely place to stay for a night. Read about rainforests in Sri Lanka.

Other areas

Some adventure companies also offer canyoning in other parts of the hill country, depending on the season and the water levels. Kitulgala remains the most established and reliable place, with experienced operators and a choice of routes.

What happens on a canyoning trip

1. Meet your guide

You meet your guide at the adventure centre in Kitulgala. You will be given a helmet, a life jacket and sometimes a harness and gloves. Your guide explains the route and the safety rules.

2. Walk to the start

A short walk or drive takes you into the forest to the top of the canyon. The walk itself is beautiful, through rubber plantations, village gardens and rainforest.

3. Down the canyon

You then follow the stream downhill. Depending on the route, you might:

  • Slide down smooth rock chutes into pools, like a natural waterslide
  • Jump from rocks into deep pools, from heights your guide chooses for your level
  • Abseil down a small waterfall on a rope, with the guide controlling it from above
  • Swim across calm pools
  • Scramble over boulders and through narrow gaps

Ask before booking whether jumps and slides are optional and whether a safe bypass is available. Do not assume every route has a walk-around option.

4. Finish at the river

Most routes end at or near the Kelani River. You then walk or drive back to the centre to change and have lunch.

A canyoning trip usually takes around two to three hours, including the walk in and out.

How fit do you need to be?

Canyoning in Kitulgala is designed for beginners, but it is still a physical activity. You should:

  • Be in reasonable health and able to walk on uneven, slippery ground
  • Be comfortable in water. Some operators ask that you can swim
  • Be happy to follow your guide's instructions

Operators set their own age limits, so ask if you are travelling with children. Canyoning is generally not suitable for people with heart conditions, back or neck problems, or who are pregnant. If you are unsure, check with your doctor first.

Is canyoning safe?

Canyoning involves risks from moving water, slippery rocks and changing conditions even with a guide. To stay safe:

  • Choose an established operator with trained guides and good equipment. Don't go alone or without a guide.
  • Always wear your helmet and life jacket.
  • Only jump where your guide tells you. Pools can hide rocks, and the guide knows where it is deep enough.
  • Never go canyoning after heavy rain, when the streams can rise quickly. Good operators will cancel or change the route.
  • Check your travel insurance covers adventure activities. Our tours do not include insurance.

When to go

Canyoning is possible for much of the year, but it depends on the water levels and weather. Kitulgala is in the wet zone, so it can rain at any time of year, but heavy monsoon rains usually come from about May to July and again around October and November. After heavy rain, the streams can be too fast for safe canyoning, and trips may be cancelled. Drier periods, such as from about December to April, often have the most reliable conditions. Your operator will decide on the day. Read our guide to the best time to visit Sri Lanka.

What to wear and bring

  • Swimwear, worn under quick-drying clothes such as shorts and a T-shirt
  • Shoes with good grip that you don't mind getting wet, such as old trainers or sports sandals with a heel strap. Flip-flops are not suitable
  • A change of clothes and a towel for afterwards
  • Sunscreen and insect repellent
  • A waterproof phone case if you want to take photos, though many operators can take photos for you

Leave jewellery and valuables at your hotel.

Canyoning and rafting in one day

Kitulgala is famous for white-water rafting on the Kelani River, and many visitors do both in one day. A typical plan is rafting in the morning, lunch by the river, then canyoning in the afternoon, or the other way around. Our Kitulgala rafting tour can include canyoning. Other things to do in Kitulgala

  • Rainforest walks with a local guide, looking for birds, butterflies and plants
  • Bird watching. The forests around Kitulgala are home to several of Sri Lanka's endemic birds. See bird watching in Sri Lanka
  • River views from authorised safe access points; calm-looking water is not proof of safe swimming
  • Visiting the film location of *The Bridge on the River Kwai*, which was filmed in the area in the 1950s

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Wearing flip-flops. You need shoes with a good grip that stay on in the water.

  • Jumping without the guide's go-ahead. Only jump where your guide says it is deep enough.
  • Bringing valuables. Leave them at your hotel or with your driver.
