Where to Stay in Sri Lanka

Quick answer

Where you stay in Sri Lanka depends on your route and the season. Most trips use a few bases: Negombo or Colombo for the first or last night, Sigiriya or Dambulla for the Cultural Triangle, Kandy, a tea country town such as Nuwara Eliya or Ella, Tissamaharama for Yala safaris, and a beach on the coast that is in season. Choose two-night stays where possible, and pick a style that suits you, from tea bungalows and safari camps to boutique villas and family guesthouses.

How to choose where to stay

Before choosing hotels, decide three things:

  1. Your route. Sri Lanka is small, but roads are slow. Group your nights into a few bases rather than moving every day.
  2. The season. The south and west coasts are best from about November to April. The east coast is best from about May to September. Choose your beach accordingly.
  3. Your style. Do you want a pool and spa, a historic bungalow, a tented camp, or a simple family-run guesthouse with home cooking?

Our sample 7-day, 10-day and 14-day tours show how bases fit into a route. Our Sri Lanka itinerary guide has more ideas.

First and last night: Negombo or Colombo

Negombo is a beach town close to Bandaranaike International Airport. It is the most convenient place to stay if you land late at night or fly out early. There are hotels for every budget, a long beach and a busy fish market.

Colombo is Sri Lanka's largest city, with smart hotels, restaurants, shopping and colonial architecture. Stay here if you want to explore the city for a day. It is further from the airport than Negombo, and traffic can be heavy. Our one day in Colombo guide can help you plan.

The Cultural Triangle: Sigiriya, Dambulla or Habarana

The Cultural Triangle is home to Sigiriya, Dambulla, Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura. Most travellers choose one central base and take day trips.

  • Sigiriya: best for early climbs of Sigiriya or Pidurangala. Many hotels have views of the rock or of forest and lakes.
  • Dambulla: a busier town, convenient for the cave temple and with good road connections.
  • Habarana: a junction town close to Minneriya and Kaudulla national parks for elephant safaris.

Two or three nights here is ideal. See our Cultural Triangle guide.

Kandy

Kandy is a hilly city around a lake, home to the Temple of the Tooth. Hotels in the hills around the city often have lovely views but can involve steep roads. Hotels near the lake make it easy to walk into town. One or two nights is usually enough. During the Kandy Esala Perahera festival, usually in July or August, book well ahead. See our Kandy Esala Perahera guide.

Tea country: Nuwara Eliya, Hatton, Haputale and Ella

The hill country has some of Sri Lanka's most memorable places to stay.

  • Nuwara Eliya: a high-altitude hill town, cool and misty, with colonial-style hotels and old tea planters' bungalows. Bring a warm layer for the evenings.
  • Hatton: the area around Hatton and the Adam's Peak region is home to restored tea bungalows set among the estates, ideal for a peaceful, slower stay.
  • Haputale: a quieter town with dramatic views, close to Lipton's Seat.
  • Ella: a lively small town with guesthouses, eco lodges and boutique hotels, many with views across the Ella Gap. Read our list of the best things to do in Ella.

Our tea country guide covers the region in more detail.

Safari bases: Yala, Udawalawe and Wilpattu

  • Yala: stay in Tissamaharama, the seaside village of Kirinda, or a safari camp or lodge on the park edge. See our guide to getting from Ella to Yala.
  • Udawalawe: small hotels and guesthouses near the park entrance make early safaris easy.
  • Wilpattu: a few lodges and camps lie close to the park, and some travellers combine it with Kalpitiya on the coast.

The south and west coast (about November to April)

  • Galle Fort: stay inside the walls in a restored colonial house or boutique hotel, within walking distance of cafés and the ramparts.
  • Unawatuna: a sheltered bay near Galle with guesthouses and beach hotels.
  • Weligama: good for beginner surfers, with surf camps and beach hotels.
  • Mirissa: a lively beach town and base for whale watching in season.
  • Hiriketiya and Talalla: small, relaxed bays with boutique stays and yoga retreats.
  • Tangalle: long, quiet beaches with villas and secluded resorts.
  • Bentota: larger resorts, ayurveda spas and a river, close to the airport.

For a slower beach stay, see our guide to relaxing beach holidays and our list of the best beaches in Sri Lanka.

The east coast (about May to September)

  • Trincomalee and Nilaveli: long beaches, with access to Pigeon Island for snorkelling.
  • Pasikuda: a shallow bay in places; swimming suitability depends on conditions and supervision.
  • Arugam Bay: a surf town with relaxed guesthouses and cafés.

The north: Jaffna

Jaffna has a growing number of hotels and guesthouses, from simple family-run places to comfortable city hotels. Two or three nights lets you explore the city, temples and islands. Our east coast and north tour covers the region.

Types of places to stay

Boutique hotels and villas

Small, stylish hotels and private villas are common in Galle, the south coast and the hill country. Many have only a handful of rooms and personal service.

Tea bungalows

Former planters' bungalows on working tea estates offer a peaceful, old-world stay, often with home-cooked meals and estate walks.

Safari camps and lodges

Tented camps and lodges near Yala, Wilpattu and Udawalawe let you hear the jungle at night and reach the parks early.

Eco lodges

Eco lodges near rainforests, such as Sinharaja and Kitulgala, focus on nature and low-impact living.

Ayurveda and wellness resorts

Dedicated resorts offer ayurveda programmes over several days or weeks. Read our guide to ayurveda in Sri Lanka or see our wellness tour.

Beach resorts

Larger resorts with pools and restaurants are found in Bentota, Pasikuda and parts of the south coast, and suit families.

Guesthouses and homestays

Family-run guesthouses are found almost everywhere. They are good value and a lovely way to try home cooking and meet local people.

How many bases do you need?

Trip lengthSuggested bases
3–5 days2–3 bases, such as Sigiriya and Kandy
7 days3–4 bases, such as Sigiriya, Kandy, Ella and one beach
10 days4–5 bases, adding a safari stop
14 days or more5–7 bases, with longer beach stays

When to book

For travel from December to March, and in July and August, book popular hotels and safari camps two to four months ahead. Boutique stays with only a few rooms often fill first. Outside these months, you can usually book closer to your dates. Read our guide to the best time to visit Sri Lanka.

If you travel with a private driver

If you travel with a private driver, most hotels provide accommodation for drivers. When booking yourself, it is worth checking this, especially at small villas. If we book your hotels for you, we arrange this automatically.

Choosing the right style for your budget

You do not need to stay in the same style of hotel throughout your trip. Many travellers mix and match: a simple guesthouse in Ella, a special tea bungalow for one night, a safari camp near Yala and a comfortable beach hotel at the end of the trip. Spending more on one or two memorable stays, and less elsewhere, often gives the best overall experience.

What to check before you book

  • Location: is the hotel close to the sights you want, or will you need a car each day?
  • Access: some hill country and beach hotels are reached by steep paths or steps, which matters for older travellers and young children.
  • Air conditioning: useful in the hot lowlands, less important in the cool hills.
  • Meals: remote hotels and tea bungalows often include dinner, as there may be few restaurants nearby.
  • Driver accommodation: if you travel with a driver, check that the hotel has rooms for drivers.
  • Cancellation policy: check the terms before you pay.

Choose your overnight bases before choosing hotels

Plot the route and then select accommodation in each base. Sigiriya, Dambulla and Habarana serve different priorities within the Cultural Triangle: proximity to a morning climb, a town base or access to several excursions. In tea country, check the exact hotel location; a hillside property outside Ella or Nuwara Eliya can add travel to every meal or activity.

For a short trip, fewer bases usually means more usable holiday time. For a longer trip, two or three nights in a key region allow weather alternatives and quieter mornings. Do not choose a distant hotel solely because its name includes the destination. Confirm access roads, approximate travel to your chosen sights and whether you need transport after dark.

Room, access and coast checks that matter

Ask about stairs, lifts, distance from parking, room configuration, air conditioning or heating, and meals if these affect your comfort. A “family room” does not necessarily provide the beds or privacy your group needs. Tell us children’s ages and whether you need connecting rooms, step-free access or a quiet location so specific availability can be checked.

Coast-season months describe broad weather patterns, not safe-swimming guarantees. South and west beaches and east-coast bays have different seasonal tendencies, but currents and local weather still vary. If swimming is central to your holiday, discuss supervised areas, pool access and flexible days. Before accepting accommodation, check the written meal plan, cancellation terms and whether substitutions require your agreement.

Frequently asked questions

Where should I stay on my first night in Sri Lanka?

Negombo is the most convenient choice, as it is close to the airport. Colombo suits travellers who want to see the city.

What is the best base for Sigiriya?

Sigiriya itself is best for early climbs. Dambulla and Habarana are good alternatives with easy access to nearby sights and safaris.

Should I stay in Ella or Nuwara Eliya?

Ella is livelier with more hikes; Nuwara Eliya is cooler and quieter with colonial charm. Many travellers stay in both.

Where should I stay near the beach?

From about November to April, choose the south or west coast, such as Galle, Mirissa or Tangalle. From about May to September, choose the east coast, such as Trincomalee, Pasikuda or Arugam Bay.

Can you book hotels for me?

Yes. We can book all your accommodation as part of a tailor-made trip. See how to book or contact us.

Should I change hotels every night?

Usually fewer bases reduce packing and driving. Choose overnight towns around your priorities and flight timings rather than trying to sleep in every destination.

Can you guarantee beach weather?

No. Seasonal patterns help choose a coast, but rain, currents and sea conditions vary.

What should families confirm before booking rooms?

Confirm beds, room layout, children’s ages, stairs, pool supervision and any required connecting rooms or child equipment.

Are hotel names in a sample itinerary confirmed bookings?

No. Ask which properties and room types are confirmed and how any alternatives will be agreed.

Should I stay near the airport before departure?

Consider your flight time, final hotel location and road journey. An early flight may justify returning nearer the airport the previous night.
