East Coast
Pasikuda is a bay on the east coast known for its very shallow, calm water protected by an offshore reef. A string of resort hotels lines the beach.
You can wade a long way out in warm, gentle water, which makes it particularly good for families and relaxed swimmers.
It pairs well with the Cultural Triangle, as it is a natural beach finish after Polonnaruwa.

Pasikuda is a resort beach on the east coast, north of Batticaloa. Its shallow bay is protected by a reef, so you can wade out a long way in calm, clear water. That makes it one of the best beaches in Sri Lanka for children and less confident swimmers.
Next door is Kalkudah, a quieter beach with a more natural feel.
Pasikuda's season runs from roughly April to September, when the east coast is dry and the sea is calm. From around November to January the north-east monsoon brings rain and rougher seas.
Batticaloa, around an hour south, has a Dutch fort on its lagoon, a lighthouse and a lively market. The lagoon is said to be home to 'singing fish', whose sounds are said to be heard on calm full-moon nights.
From Pasikuda it is a few hours to Polonnaruwa and the Cultural Triangle.
Most accommodation is in resort hotels lining the bay, with a few guesthouses inland. It is the place for a relaxing few days at the end of a cultural tour.
