Things to do
Surfing in Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka has two surf seasons on two coasts. The south-west is generally best from around November to April, and the east coast around Arugam Bay from around April or May to October.
Learning to surf
Weligama's wide bay has gentle waves and many surf schools, making it one of the best places in the country to learn.
Intermediate and advanced
Hikkaduwa and the reef breaks around Ahangama and Midigama suit improving surfers in the south-west season. Arugam Bay's point breaks draw experienced surfers in the east-coast season.
When to surf where
Sri Lanka has two surf seasons. The south and west coasts, around Weligama, Mirissa, Hikkaduwa and Midigama, usually work best from about November to April.
The east coast around Arugam Bay takes over from about May to October. Planning your route around the right coast for your month makes the biggest difference to your surf trip.
What to bring
A rash vest or surf shirt and strong reef-safe sunscreen are essential. Reef booties help at reef breaks.
Boards and lessons are easy to arrange locally, so most travellers don't bring their own.
Surf spots by level
Beginners: Weligama, and some breaks around Hikkaduwa and Ahangama. Intermediate: Midigama's reefs, Hiriketiya's bay and Hikkaduwa. Advanced: Main Point at Arugam Bay, and some reef breaks on the south coast when big swells arrive.
A surf trip itinerary
For the south coast from December to March: stay in Weligama for lessons, move on to Midigama or Ahangama as you improve, and finish in Hiriketiya's sheltered bay. For the east coast from May to September: base yourself in Arugam Bay and try the surrounding breaks. Many travellers combine a surf week with the Cultural Triangle or the hill country.
Surf etiquette and safety
Respect the line-up and the local surfers: don't drop in on someone already riding a wave, and give way to the surfer closest to the peak. Wear reef booties at reef breaks, check the tide, and ask surf schools about currents before you paddle out. Never leave your board unattended in the shallows where swimmers are.
