Surrounded by warm ocean and crossed by rivers and lagoons, Sri Lanka is a playground for water lovers. You can learn to surf in a palm-fringed bay, kite across a lagoon, dive on shipwrecks, raft through jungle rapids and watch blue whales, often all on one trip. This guide covers the best water sports, where and when to do them, and how to stay safe.

1. Surfing

Sri Lanka is one of the best places in Asia to learn to surf. The water is warm, the waves are friendly in many bays, and surf schools are everywhere.

South and west coast (about November to April) - Weligama: a wide, sandy bay with gentle waves, perfect for beginners. - Hiriketiya: a small horseshoe bay with a beach break and a reef break. - Ahangama and Midigama: several reef and point breaks for intermediates. - Hikkaduwa: reef breaks and a lively scene.

East coast (about May to October) - Arugam Bay: Sri Lanka's most famous surf spot, with a long right-hand point break and nearby breaks such as Whiskey Point and Peanut Farm.

See surfing, Arugam Bay, things to do in Arugam Bay, Weligama and Hiriketiya.

2. Kitesurfing

Kalpitiya, on a lagoon peninsula north of Negombo, is Sri Lanka's kitesurfing capital. Strong, steady winds blow in two seasons: the main season roughly May to October, and a second season roughly December to March. The flat lagoon is ideal for learning, and experienced riders head to the islands and open sea. Kite schools offer lessons for all levels.

See kitesurfing and Kalpitiya.

3. Scuba diving

Sri Lanka has coral reefs, rock formations and many shipwrecks, from colonial-era ships to World War II wrecks.

  • Hikkaduwa and Galle: reefs and wrecks, with dive centres for courses.
  • Mirissa and Weligama: reefs and rocky dive sites.
  • Colombo: wreck dives off the coast.
  • Trincomalee and Pigeon Island: reefs and wrecks on the east coast in season.
  • Great Basses, off the south-east coast: advanced diving in a short season.

See scuba diving, shipwreck diving and coral reefs.

4. Snorkelling

You don't need a licence to see Sri Lanka's underwater life. - Pigeon Island, near Trincomalee: a marine national park with reef fish and sometimes reef sharks, in season. - Hikkaduwa: shallow reefs and turtles close to the beach. - Unawatuna and Jungle Beach: calm water in season.

Never touch coral or turtles, and use reef-safe sunscreen. See snorkelling, Pigeon Island and things to do in Hikkaduwa.

5. White-water rafting

At Kitulgala, in the rainforest between Colombo and the hill country, the Kelani river offers rafting with rapids suitable for beginners. Trips last about 1–2 hours on the water, with guides and safety equipment. Water levels depend on rain and the upstream power station, so trips are sometimes rescheduled. Kitulgala is also known as a filming location for The Bridge on the River Kwai.

See white-water rafting, Kitulgala, our Kitulgala rafting tour and film locations in Sri Lanka.

6. Canyoning

Also at Kitulgala, canyoning combines sliding down natural rock chutes, jumping into pools and abseiling down waterfalls. It's an exciting half-day with experienced guides. See canyoning.

7. Jet ski, banana boat and water ski in Bentota

The Bentota river and lagoon are Sri Lanka's centre for motorised water sports: jet skiing, banana boat rides, water skiing, wakeboarding, tube rides and speed boat trips. It's fun for families and groups. See Bentota and things to do in Bentota.

8. Kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding

Paddle through mangroves on the lagoons of Negombo, Koggala, Bentota or Arugam Bay, or try stand-up paddleboarding in calm bays such as Hiriketiya. Early mornings are calmest and best for spotting birds. See kayaking and lagoons.

9. Whale and dolphin watching

Boat trips from Mirissa, roughly November to April, offer a good chance of seeing blue whales, and sometimes sperm whales and dolphins. Off Trincomalee, roughly May to August, whales can be seen closer to shore. Kalpitiya is known for large pods of spinner dolphins. See whale watching, whale watching in Mirissa, whale watching in Trincomalee and dolphin watching.

10. Fishing trips

Join local fishermen or charter a boat for deep-sea fishing on the south or east coast. Choose operators who follow responsible fishing practices.

Safety tips

  • Use licensed, reputable operators with proper safety equipment.
  • Wear a life jacket on boats, rafts and jet skis.
  • Check your travel insurance covers your chosen activities, especially diving.
  • Respect the monsoon: don't swim or surf on a coast in its rough season unless you're experienced and with local guidance.
  • Watch for rip currents and follow red flags.
  • Don't drink alcohol before water activities.
  • Protect yourself from the sun: reef-safe sunscreen, a rash vest and a hat.

Water sports for families

Children can enjoy snorkelling in calm bays, banana boat rides in Bentota, gentle kayaking, whale watching (for older children) and beginner surf lessons at Weligama. Always check minimum ages and supervise closely. See Sri Lanka with kids and our family tour.

Water sports for adventure lovers

Combine Kitulgala rafting and canyoning, a surf trip to Arugam Bay or the south coast, a kite course in Kalpitiya and wreck dives in Hikkaduwa. See our adventure tour and adventure in Sri Lanka.

Responsible water sports

  • Never touch, stand on or collect coral.
  • Don't chase or touch turtles, whales or dolphins.
  • Choose whale-watching operators that keep their distance.
  • Avoid single-use plastic on boats and beaches.

See our responsible travel guide.

Getting around

Water sports spots are spread across the island, and you'll often travel with boards or gear. A private driver makes it easy to move between coasts and carry equipment. See our private driver page.

Learning to surf in Sri Lanka

Most surf schools offer lessons of about 1.5–2 hours, with boards, rash vests and an instructor in the water. Beginners usually stand up within the first few lessons. Surf camps offer packages with daily lessons, yoga and accommodation. The best beginner spots are Weligama, Ahangama and Hiriketiya (November to April) and the inside sections around Arugam Bay (May to October).

Diving courses

Dive centres on the south, west and east coasts offer try-dives for beginners and internationally recognised courses from open water to advanced. A beginner course usually takes three to four days. Bring your certification card if you already dive, and check that your insurance covers diving.

Water sports by budget

Snorkelling, kayaking and beginner surf lessons are inexpensive. Diving, kitesurfing courses and private boat trips cost more. Prices change, so ask the operator or ask us for current rates. See the Sri Lanka trip cost guide.

Water sports and the monsoons

Sri Lanka's two monsoons are the key to planning. The southwest monsoon (about May to September) brings rough seas to the south and west coasts, while the east is calm. The northeast monsoon (about November to February) brings rain to the east and north, while the south and west are calm. There's almost always a coast in season. See Sri Lanka's rainy season.

Lagoon and river safaris

For gentle water fun, take a boat safari on the Madu river near Balapitiya, Koggala Lake near Galle, or the lagoons of Arugam Bay. You'll see mangroves, birds, monitor lizards and sometimes crocodiles. They're perfect for families and non-swimmers.

What to bring

Pack reef-safe sunscreen, a rash vest, sunglasses with a strap, water shoes, a dry bag and a light towel. Surf schools and dive centres provide equipment, but experienced surfers and divers may prefer to bring their own.

Water sports for couples

Try a sunset catamaran trip, a private snorkelling boat, a stand-up paddleboard session in a quiet bay or a whale-watching morning together. See our honeymoon tour.

Which water sport should I choose?

You want Try
Something easy and relaxing Snorkelling, kayaking, lagoon boat trips
A new skill Surfing, kitesurfing or a diving course
An adrenaline rush Rafting, canyoning, jet skiing
Wildlife Whale watching, snorkelling with turtles

Our tip for planning

Pick one or two water sports you really want to try, and build your route around the coast that's in season. That way you'll have the best conditions, and you won't spend all your time driving between coasts.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Going to the wrong coast for the season.
  • Choosing the cheapest operator without checking safety equipment.
  • Forgetting travel insurance for diving or adventure sports.
  • Touching coral or turtles.
  • Underestimating the sun on the water.
