Quick answer
The best time to plan a holiday to Sri Lanka for beach activities depends on the coast. The south and west coasts, including Bentota, Hikkaduwa, Unawatuna, Mirissa and Tangalle, are usually best from about December to April, with calm seas and sunshine. The east coast, including Trincomalee, Nilaveli, Pasikuda and Arugam Bay, is usually best from about April to September. Because of Sri Lanka's two monsoons, there's a good beach somewhere almost all year. Whale watching, surfing and snorkelling each have their own best months, so plan around the activity you care about most.

Understanding Sri Lanka's two monsoons
The south-west monsoon (about May to September) brings rain and rough seas to the south and west coasts. At the same time, the east coast is usually dry and sunny.
The north-east monsoon (about November to January) brings rain to the east and north. At the same time, the south and west coasts usually enjoy their best weather.
This pattern is why Sri Lanka has "two beach seasons". See Sri Lanka rainy season and the best time to visit Sri Lanka.

For relaxed swimming, choose calm, sheltered bays in the right season. On the south coast, bays such as Unawatuna can be calm in season, while some open beaches have strong currents. On the east coast, Pasikuda's shallow water is famous for gentle swimming. See best beaches in Sri Lanka.
Whale watching
Mirissa is one of the world's best places to see blue whales, usually from about November to April. In the middle of the year, whale watching moves to Trincomalee on the east coast. Boats leave early in the morning when the sea is calmer. See whale watching in Mirissa, whale watching in Trincomalee and our Mirissa whale watching tour.
Surfing
Beginners usually learn on the gentle waves of Weligama and around Hikkaduwa from about November to April. Arugam Bay on the east coast is Sri Lanka's best-known surf spot, with its main season from about April to October. See surfing and things to do in Arugam Bay.
Snorkelling and diving
