Itinerary, hour by hour
Times below are for a pickup in Unawatuna. Earlier or later pickups apply for other locations (see the table further down).
5:15am – Hotel pickup. Your driver meets you at your hotel reception. Bring your jacket, sunscreen and camera; we bring bottled water.
6:00am – Arrive at Mirissa harbour. Your driver walks you to the boat and handles check-in. You will receive a life jacket and a short safety briefing from the crew.
6:30am – Head out to sea. The boat travels south into deep water. Breakfast is usually served on board during the first hour, while the crew scans the horizon for blows.
7:30am to 10:30am – Whale and dolphin search. This is the heart of the trip. Once whales are found, the captain positions the boat at a respectful distance so everyone can watch them surface, breathe and dive. Spinner dolphins are often seen on the way out or back.
10:30am to midday – Return to harbour. Return times depend on where the whales were found. Your driver will be waiting at the harbour.
Afternoon – Your choice. Return to your hotel, or ask your driver to drop you at Mirissa beach, Coconut Tree Hill or a cafe for lunch. You can also add a visit to Galle Fort (see “Make a day of it” below).

Pickup locations and drive times
We pick up from any hotel on the south and west coast. These are typical drive times to Mirissa harbour in the early morning.
| Pickup from | Approximate drive time | Approximate pickup time |
|---|---|---|
| Mirissa and Weligama | 5–20 minutes | 5:45–6:00am |
| Galle and Unawatuna | 40–50 minutes | 5:10–5:20am |
| Koggala and Ahangama | 25–35 minutes | 5:20–5:30am |
| Hikkaduwa | 1 hour 15 minutes | 4:45am |
| Tangalle and Hiriketiya | 45 minutes to 1 hour | 5:00–5:15am |
| Colombo | about 2.5 hours | Overnight stay recommended |
From Colombo, we strongly suggest staying the night before in Mirissa or Weligama. You can book a Colombo airport transfer straight to the south coast, or combine the trip with a private driver in Sri Lanka for several days.
The boat and safety
We work only with boat operators we trust. Before we recommend a boat, we check that:
- it is a stable, well-maintained vessel with shaded seating on more than one deck
- there are enough life jackets for every passenger, including children’s sizes
- there is a toilet on board
- the crew is experienced and follows responsible whale watching practice, keeping a respectful distance and never chasing whales
- the boat is not overloaded
The boat will not leave if the sea is unsafe. If a trip is cancelled because of weather, we will rebook you or refund the boat ticket.
What you will see, by month
| Month | What to expect |
|---|---|
| November | Season opening; sightings building, some swell |
| December to March | Peak months; blue whales seen on most trips, plus sperm whales and spinner dolphins |
| April | Good sightings early in the month, sea becoming changeable |
| May to October | Monsoon season; tours do not run. Consider Trincomalee instead |

What to bring
- Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat
- A light jacket or long-sleeved top for the cool early morning
- Seasickness tablets, taken an hour before departure
- A camera with a zoom lens, or binoculars
- A small dry bag for your phone, passport copy and money
- Cash for tips and snacks
Tip: eat something light before you leave the hotel, and sit at the back of the lower deck if you feel unwell. Looking at the horizon helps far more than looking at a screen.
Make a day of it
Because you are back on land by midday, it is easy to turn the tour into a full day on the south coast. Popular add-ons:
- Galle Fort afternoon. Wander the 17th-century ramparts, lighthouse and boutique streets of Galle. Ask for our Galle day tour as an add-on.
- Stilt fishermen. Stop on the way back to see the famous stilt fishermen at Koggala.
- Beach afternoon in Mirissa. Lunch at a beach cafe, a swim, and sunset from Coconut Tree Hill. Read more about Mirissa.
- Surf lesson in Weligama. A gentle bay perfect for first-timers, ten minutes from Mirissa.
If you are planning a longer stay by the sea, our beach holiday packages can include this tour.

Frequently asked questions
What is your cancellation policy?
Cancellation terms are confirmed in your written quote before you pay anything.
What happens if the weather is bad?
If the operator cancels because of sea conditions, we will offer another date or refund your boat ticket.
Are whales guaranteed?
No wildlife trip can guarantee sightings. In season, most trips see whales or dolphins.
Is the tour suitable for children?
Children from about 5 years old usually enjoy it. The trip is long and the sea can roll, so bring snacks and water.
I get seasick. Should I still go?
Many people who get seasick still enjoy the trip with a tablet taken in advance, a light breakfast and a seat at the back of the boat.
When is the best time to go?
December to March gives the calmest seas and the most reliable sightings.
