Search for tour agents in Sri Lanka and you'll find hundreds of options, from large Colombo agencies to one-person driver services. Choosing well makes the difference between a rushed, shop-stop trip and a smooth holiday planned around you. Here's the checklist we'd use if we were booking ourselves.
Local agent, international agency or driver?
International tour companies resell trips run by local partners. A local agent plans and runs the trip directly, usually with more flexibility and local knowledge. Independent drivers can be excellent but may not handle hotels, routes or problems if something changes.
A good local agency gives you the best of both: local expertise, your own driver and vehicle, and someone to call if plans need to change.
A 10-point checklist
- Do they reply quickly and personally, with questions about you rather than a fixed package?
- Is the itinerary realistic, with sensible driving times and two nights in most places?
- Do they explain what is included and not included, in writing?
- Is the price agreed in writing before you pay a deposit?
- Do you know who your driver will be and what vehicle you'll travel in?
- Can they adapt the route to the season, such as choosing the right coast for your month?
- Are they honest about current conditions, such as rail closures after Cyclone Ditwah?
- Do they avoid unrequested shopping stops (gems, spices, batik) on the route?
- Can you read genuine reviews on an independent site such as Tripadvisor?
- Is there one point of contact before and during the trip, reachable on WhatsApp?
Red flags
- Prices that are far below everyone else's, with vague inclusions.
- Pressure to pay in full immediately, or to pay a stranger in cash.
- Itineraries that move you to a new hotel every night.
- Promises of guaranteed leopard or whale sightings.
- Detours to 'special' shops you didn't ask for.
Questions to ask before you book
- Who will drive us, and what languages do they speak?
- Are entrance fees, safari jeeps and train tickets included?
- Where does the driver stay at night?
- What happens if a flight is delayed or a road is closed?
- How do deposits, payment and cancellations work?
How we work
We're a Sri Lankan tour company. You tell us your dates, group size and interests; we suggest a route, refine it with you, confirm everything in writing, and then drive you around the island in our own vehicles, with the same small team from your first message to the airport drop-off.
Frequently asked questions
Is it better to book a Sri Lanka tour locally or through an international company?
Booking with a reputable local agency usually gives you more flexibility and direct contact with the people running your trip. Check reviews and get everything in writing.
How far in advance should I contact a tour agent?
Two to three months ahead is comfortable for most trips, and earlier for December to April and festival dates.
Do Sri Lankan tour agents include hotels?
Many do, or can work around hotels you've booked yourself. Ask which option suits your trip.
