Sample itinerary
A trip built around wildlife: elephants in the Cultural Triangle, leopards in Yala, endemic birds in Sinharaja and, in season, whales off the south coast. This is a suggested sample itinerary that we adapt to the season and your interests. Sightings are never guaranteed.
Minneriya or Kaudulla, depending on where elephants are gathering.
Rainforest birding, or whale-watching from Mirissa in season.
For a small island, Sri Lanka has extraordinary wildlife. Asian elephants are found in large herds in parks such as Minneriya and Udawalawe. Leopards are seen most often in Yala and Wilpattu. Sloth bears, crocodiles and water buffalo are found in the dry-zone parks, and there are hundreds of bird species, including many found only in Sri Lanka.
Off the coast, blue whales and dolphins are seen in season.
The elephant gathering at Minneriya usually peaks in the dry months, around July to October. Whale-watching runs off Mirissa from about November to April, and off Trincomalee from about March to August. Some parks close for short periods each year. We plan the order of parks around your travel month.
We ask jeep drivers to keep a respectful distance, to avoid crowding animals and to switch off engines when watching. We do not include elephant rides or places where animals are kept for shows.
