Sri Lanka Leopard Safari Tour: Yala and Wilpattu
Leopard resting on a rock in Yala National Park
Quick answer: A Sri Lanka leopard safari tour gives you the best chance of seeing the Sri Lankan leopard, a unique subspecies that is often active in daylight. The tour combines several safaris in Yala, especially Block 1, which has one of the highest leopard densities in the world, and Wilpattu, a quieter forest park with natural lakes. Plan 3–5 days, with at least one full-day safari. The best months are about February to July. Some areas of Yala can close for part of the dry season, usually around September to October, so check dates before you plan.
Free, no-obligation written plan. Tailor-made to your dates.
The leopard is the top predator in Sri Lanka, with no lions or tigers to compete with. That means leopards here are often relaxed and visible, resting on rocks, walking along tracks or lying in trees. This tour is designed for travellers who want to give themselves the best possible chance of an unforgettable sighting.

Tips for seeing leopards
- Do at least one full-day safari. Leopards are often seen in the quieter middle of the day when other jeeps leave.
- Go early: be at the gate when it opens.
- Choose an experienced driver-tracker who knows the park well.
- Be patient and quiet: waiting near a waterhole often pays off.
- Bring binoculars and a long lens (200–400 mm is ideal).
Responsible leopard watching
- Never ask your driver to get too close or to block a leopard's path.
- Avoid crowding around a sighting with many jeeps.
- Stay inside the jeep, keep quiet and never feed animals.
Responsible behaviour protects the leopards and keeps parks open for everyone.
Where you'll stay
We'll suggest hotels close to the park gates for early starts, from comfortable guesthouses to tented safari camps, depending on your hotel style.
Good to know
- Park tickets and jeep hire are paid separately; we arrange licensed jeeps for you. See Sri Lanka entry fees.

- Check the park closure dates for your travel month.
