Things to do
Hiking in Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka's hill country and forests offer walks for every level, from an hour through tea plantations to a night climb up Adam's Peak. Most hikes are best started early, before clouds and heat build up.
Easy walks
Little Adam's Peak and Nine Arch Bridge near Ella and the lake paths in Kandy and Nuwara Eliya are gentle and suit most travellers.
Half-day hikes
The World's End loop at Horton Plains, Ella Rock and the walk to the upper pools at Diyaluma Falls are longer and need good shoes; a local guide helps with route-finding.
Big days
Adam's Peak is a demanding night climb up thousands of steps. Guided walks in Sinharaja rainforest and the Knuckles range offer wilder country.
Guided treks in the Knuckles
The Knuckles Mountain Range, north-east of Kandy, is a UNESCO-listed area of cloud forest, grasslands and remote villages. Trails range from half-day walks to multi-day treks with camping or homestays. A local guide is needed, as paths are not always clear.
What to pack
Light walking shoes or boots with grip, a rain jacket, a warm layer for high areas, sun protection, water, snacks and leech socks for forest trails in wet weather.
Choosing a hike for your fitness
If you are new to hiking or travelling with children, choose Little Adam's Peak near Ella or the gentle loop at Horton Plains. For a moderate challenge, Ella Rock and Pidurangala involve steeper paths and some scrambling. For a big day, climb Adam's Peak overnight in season, or join a guided trek in the Knuckles range.
Our drivers can drop you at the start of a trail and collect you at the end, which makes one-way hikes possible.
Hiking safely
Start early, carry plenty of water, tell someone your plans, and use a local guide where paths are unclear, especially Ella Rock and the Knuckles. Do not walk on active railway tracks when a train is due. After rain, paths can be slippery and leeches are common in forests.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need hiking boots?
Trainers with good grip are fine for most walks. Boots help on wet or rocky trails such as Ella Rock or Diyaluma.
Is a guide necessary?
Not for the easiest walks, but recommended for Ella Rock, Diyaluma's upper pools, Sinharaja and the Knuckles.
When is the best hiking season?
The early months of the year often bring clearer mornings in the hills, but conditions vary.
What is the easiest good hike?
Little Adam's Peak near Ella is short and well marked, with big views for little effort. Horton Plains' World's End loop is longer but on a good path.
Can I hike Adam's Peak with children?
Older, fit children manage it, but it is thousands of steps and usually climbed at night. Shorter hikes suit younger children better.
