Getting Around Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka looks small on the map, but winding roads and busy towns make journeys longer than you'd expect. These guides compare private car, bus and train on the most-travelled routes, with honest timings and the stops worth making.

Rail update (checked 18 October 2026): Cyclone Ditwah damaged the hill-country railway in November 2025. Trains currently run between Colombo Fort and Peradeniya, and between Nanu Oya, Ella and Badulla, but not yet into Kandy station or between Kandy and Nanu Oya. We drive the closed sections and plan train rides where the line is running. Please confirm with Sri Lanka Railways before you travel. Getting around Sri Lanka

Getting around: frequently asked questions

What is the best way to get around Sri Lanka?

A private car and driver is the most flexible and comfortable option. Trains are scenic but slow and partly closed for repairs, and buses are cheap but crowded with little room for luggage.

Is it safe to drive yourself in Sri Lanka?

Self-driving is possible with the right permit, but roads are busy and driving styles take getting used to. Most visitors prefer a local driver.

Are the trains running after Cyclone Ditwah?

Partly. See the dated rail update on this page. We drive the closed sections and plan train rides where the line is open.

How long does it take to get between cities?

Usually longer than the distance suggests: 40 to 50 km an hour on average is a fair rule of thumb. Each route guide gives typical times.
