By private car: the easiest way
A private car with a driver is the most comfortable and reliable way to make this long journey. Your driver picks you up at your hotel in Colombo, Negombo or straight from the airport, and drops you at your hotel in Ella.
Route 1: through Ratnapura and the hills
This is the most direct road. It runs east from Colombo through Avissawella and Ratnapura, the "City of Gems", then climbs through Balangoda and Belihuloya into the hills, passing Haputale and Bandarawela before reaching Ella. You pass rubber plantations, rice fields, rivers and, higher up, tea estates and wide mountain views. The last section has many bends.
Route 2: the Southern Expressway and Wellawaya
This route uses the fast Southern Expressway towards the south, then heads inland through the plains to Wellawaya, before climbing the steep mountain road past Ravana Falls to Ella. It can be a similar total time, with more motorway and less winding road, and it makes it easy to add a safari in Udawalawe or a night on the south coast.
Your driver will choose the best route for the day, depending on traffic, weather and where you'd like to stop.
Why choose a private car?
- Pick-up from the airport, Colombo or Negombo at any hour
- A comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle for a long day
- Stops whenever you need them, for food, photos or a rest
- A driver who knows the mountain roads and the safest times to drive
You can book a single transfer, or include this journey in a trip with a private driver. If you're landing at the airport, see our airport transfers.

Should you split the journey?
Six hours on the road is a long day, especially after a flight. Many travellers prefer to split it:
- A night in Kandy, then on through tea country. See Colombo to Kandy and Kandy to Ella.
- A night in Nuwara Eliya, then the scenic train from Nanu Oya to Ella. See Kandy to Nuwara Eliya and Ella to Nuwara Eliya.
- A night near Udawalawe, with an elephant safari, then the climb to Ella.
- A night in Haputale or Belihuloya, on the Ratnapura route.
By bus
There is no direct bus from Colombo to Ella. The usual option is a bus from Colombo towards Badulla, which passes close to Ella. Ask to get off at the junction nearest Ella, then take a short tuk-tuk ride into town. Expect the journey to take around six hours or more. Air-conditioned buses are more comfortable but still crowded, and there is little space for large bags. Start early so you arrive in daylight.
Is there a train from Colombo to Ella?
Not at the time of writing. The famous train journey from Colombo through Kandy to Ella is one of the most scenic in the world, but sections of the line have been closed for repairs. At the time of writing (October 2026), Colombo–Kandy services have been suspended since 25 October 2026, and the Kandy end of the hill country line has been closed since Cyclone Ditwah in late 2025. The scenic section from Nanu Oya (near Nuwara Eliya) to Ella has been running again since June 2026. Check the current status before you plan.
So the best way to include the train today is to travel by road to Nuwara Eliya, then take the train from Nanu Oya to Ella. Your driver can take your luggage on by road and meet you at Ella station. See our guides to the Kandy to Ella train and our train tour.
Going straight from the airport
If you land early in the morning, you can drive directly from the airport to Ella in one day, arriving in the late afternoon. It's a long day after a flight, so many travellers prefer a first night in Negombo or Colombo, or a stop on the way. See our guide to Colombo airport to Kandy, Galle and Ella.
When to travel
You can make this journey all year. Ella's clearest views are usually from about January to April. Mornings are clearer than afternoons in the hills, so an early start helps. Heavy rain is more likely from about May to July on the Ratnapura side, and from about October to December in the hills. Read our guides to the best time to visit Sri Lanka and the Sri Lanka rainy season.

Which route should you choose?

|---|---|---|

Both routes take a similar time. Tell your driver what you'd like to see, and they'll choose the best one.
Food on the way
Roadside rice and curry restaurants line both routes. In the hills, stop for a cup of fresh tea with a view, and look out for king coconut stalls on the hot lowland stretches. See Sri Lankan food to try.
