By train: the scenic option
The railway between Ella and Nanu Oya is the most famous part of Sri Lanka's hill country line. The train winds through tea estates, past waterfalls and through tunnels, climbing to Pattipola, one of the highest railway stations in Sri Lanka, before descending to Nanu Oya.
Current status
At the time of writing (October 2026), the Kandy end of the hill country railway is closed for repairs after Cyclone Ditwah in late 2025, while the scenic section from Nanu Oya (near Nuwara Eliya) to Ella has been running again since June 2026. Check the current status before you plan. This means Ella to Nanu Oya is one of the best train journeys you can still take in Sri Lanka right now.
Tips for the train
- Book reserved seats in advance if you can. Observation and reserved carriages sell out in busy months.
- Sit on the side with the best views. Many travellers find the views best on the left-hand side going from Ella towards Nanu Oya, but both sides have highlights.
- Pack a warm layer. It gets cooler as the train climbs.
- Keep your luggage light, or send it with your driver.
- Check the timetable the day before. Train times can change.
From Nanu Oya station, Nuwara Eliya town is about 10 km away, around 20 minutes by car or tuk-tuk. See our guide to the Kandy to Ella train and our train tour.
Train and driver together
The most popular plan is to take the train while your private driver drives your luggage to Nuwara Eliya and meets you at Nanu Oya station. You get the views without carrying bags, and a car is waiting when you arrive.
By private car
The drive takes about two to two and a half hours. From Ella, the road climbs through Bandarawela, a busy market town, then Welimada, surrounded by vegetable farms, before rising into the cool highlands around Nuwara Eliya. The views over terraced fields and tea estates are wonderful.
Best stops by car
- Bandarawela: a lively hill town with a cool climate and a busy market. See places to visit in Badulla and Bandarawela.
- Welimada viewpoints: terraced vegetable fields on steep slopes.
- Hakgala Botanical Garden: a hillside garden with roses, ferns and old trees, just before Nuwara Eliya.
- Seetha Amman Temple: a Hindu temple at Seetha Eliya, linked to the Ramayana story. See our Ramayana trail guide.
- A tea estate or factory in the hills near Nuwara Eliya. See tea experiences.
By bus
There is usually no direct bus from Ella to Nuwara Eliya. A typical journey is a bus from Ella to Bandarawela or Welimada, then another bus to Nuwara Eliya. It takes around three hours or more, depending on connections. Buses are cheap but crowded, with little room for luggage.
When to travel
You can make this journey all year. The clearest views are usually from about January to April. Mornings are clearer than afternoons, when mist and cloud often build in the hills, so an early train or drive gives the best views. April is a busy month in Nuwara Eliya, with many Sri Lankan holidaymakers, so book hotels early. See the best time to visit Sri Lanka.
What to do in Nuwara Eliya
Nuwara Eliya is a cool highland town with lakes, gardens and colonial buildings. Highlights include:
- Gregory Lake and Victoria Park
- Tea estates and factory tours

- Colonial-era buildings such as the old post office
Our Nuwara Eliya day tour covers the highlights in one day, and our tea country guide has more ideas.
Before you leave Ella
If you have time, hike Little Adam's Peak or Ella Rock at sunrise, or watch a train cross Nine Arch Bridge. See the best things to do in Ella.
Where to stay in Nuwara Eliya
Nuwara Eliya has colonial-style hotels, old tea planters' bungalows, guesthouses and modern hotels. Nights are cold, so look for rooms with heating or extra blankets. See our guide to where to stay in Sri Lanka.
Continuing your journey
From Nuwara Eliya, most travellers continue to Kandy, Colombo or the Cultural Triangle. See Kandy to Nuwara Eliya, which covers the same road in the other direction, and Sigiriya to Nuwara Eliya.
Plan your Ella to Nuwara Eliya journey
Ride the scenic train while your driver takes the luggage, or travel by car with stops. Tell us your date and we'll plan it around the timetable.
What affects the cost
The cost of a private transfer depends on the vehicle, any stops you add, whether your driver also meets you from the train, and the season. Train tickets are paid separately. If you travel with one of our drivers for your whole trip, this journey is simply one day of it. See how to book.
Travel tips
- Take the morning train for the clearest views.
- Send your luggage by car and travel light on the train.
- Carry a warm layer and a rain jacket. The hills can turn cold and wet quickly.
- Bring snacks and water for the train.
- Carry cash for tickets, snacks and tuk-tuks. See money in Sri Lanka.
A sample day: train and driver
- 7:00 am: breakfast in Ella.

- Around midday: arrive at Nanu Oya, where your driver is waiting.
- 1:00 pm: lunch in Nuwara Eliya.
- 3:00 pm: visit a tea factory or walk around Gregory Lake.
Exact train times change, so your driver will plan the day around the current timetable.
Train or car: which should you choose?
| Train | Car | |
|---|---|---|
| Scenery | Outstanding, through tea estates and tunnels | Very good, with viewpoints and stops |
| Time | About 3–3.5 hours to Nanu Oya | About 2–2.5 hours |
| Luggage | Best sent by car | Easy |
| Flexibility | Fixed times | Leave whenever you like |
| Best for | The experience | Comfort and stops |
Many travellers do both: the train for the views, and a car for the luggage and the last stretch.
Buying train tickets
Reserved seats on the hill country train can sell out, especially from December to April. You can usually book reserved seats in advance through Sri Lanka Railways' booking system or at stations, and unreserved tickets are sold at the station on the day. Unreserved carriages can be very crowded, and you may have to stand for part of the journey. If you're travelling with us, we can help you plan around the timetable and advise on the best option for your dates.
Photography tips for the train
- Photograph from inside the carriage, keeping your body and camera clear of open doors. Never lean out or stand in an open doorway while the train is moving.
- Look for the tunnels and curves near Haputale. Demodara is beyond Ella towards Badulla, not on the Ella–Nanu Oya journey.
- Use a fast shutter speed to avoid blur from the moving train.
- Put the camera down for a while and simply enjoy the view.
Travelling with children
Children usually love the train, especially the tunnels. Bring snacks, water and something warm, and keep them away from the open doors. If the train is full, the car may be more comfortable for younger children. See Sri Lanka with kids.
If the train is full or cancelled
Sometimes trains are full, delayed or cancelled. With a private driver, you always have a back-up: your driver can take you by road instead, stopping at viewpoints, Hakgala and the Seetha Amman Temple, so you still have a beautiful day.
Stations along the way
Between Ella and Nanu Oya, the train passes several well-known stations. Demodara and its famous loop are beyond Ella towards Badulla, so they are not part of this journey. Haputale perches on a ridge with views to the south coast on clear days. Pattipola is one of the highest stations on the line, close to Horton Plains, and Ohiya is a nearby station from which a separate road transfer to Horton Plains can be arranged. If you have time, you could break the journey at Haputale for a night. See our Haputale guide and Horton Plains guide.
Weather and what to wear
Ella is mild, but Nuwara Eliya, at about 1,900 metres, is much cooler, and the train passes through even higher ground near Pattipola. Wear layers, carry a warm top and a light rain jacket, and expect it to feel cold at the higher stations, especially in the morning. See our Sri Lanka packing list.
Accessibility
The train has steps up into the carriages and no step-free access, and stations can be busy. Travellers with limited mobility usually find the car more comfortable, with stops at the Hakgala gardens and viewpoints that are easy to reach.
Tip: buy a cup of tea from a vendor on the platform at Haputale or Nanu Oya. It is part of the experience.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming the train goes all the way to Kandy. At the time of writing, it runs only between Nanu Oya and Ella/Badulla.
- Forgetting that Nanu Oya isn't Nuwara Eliya. The town is about 20 minutes away by road.
- Travelling in the afternoon. Mist often hides the views later in the day.
- Carrying big bags on the train. Send them with your driver.
