Quick answer

The best things to do in Nuwara Eliya are visiting a working tea factory and estate, walking or boating on Gregory Lake, strolling through Victoria Park, visiting Hakgala Botanical Garden and the Seetha Amman Temple, and getting up early for the World's End hike at Horton Plains National Park. You can also see Lover's Leap waterfall, explore the colonial buildings in town, visit strawberry and dairy farms near Ambewela, and ride the scenic train from nearby Nanu Oya towards Ella. Nuwara Eliya sits at around 1,870 metres, so it's much cooler than the rest of Sri Lanka. Plan at least one or two nights.

1. Visit a tea factory and estate

Nuwara Eliya is surrounded by tea estates, and several factories welcome visitors for a short tour and a cup of tea. You'll see how fresh leaves are withered, rolled, oxidised, dried and graded. Many factories don't allow photos inside, so ask first. Some estates on the road from Kandy, around Ramboda, also have tea centres with views. See tea experiences and our Sri Lanka tea country guide.

2. Walk around Gregory Lake

Gregory Lake is the centre of town life, with a walking path, gardens and boats. You can hire a pedal boat or a rowing boat, take a pony ride, or simply walk around the lake in the late afternoon. There's a small entry fee.

3. Stroll through Victoria Park

Victoria Park, in the middle of town, is a well-kept garden with flower beds, old trees and a stream. It's best in the flowering season, around March to May, and is a good spot for birdwatching in the early morning.

4. Visit Hakgala Botanical Garden

Hakgala Botanical Garden is a short drive from town on the road towards Welimada. It's known for its roses, ferns, orchids and views of Hakgala Rock. The garden has its roots in the 19th century, when it was used for growing cinchona. Allow one to two hours.

5. See the Seetha Amman Temple

Near Hakgala, the Seetha Amman Temple is a colourful Hindu temple linked to the Ramayana. According to tradition, this is where Sita was held by Ravana. It's a popular stop on the Ramayana trail. Remove your shoes and dress modestly. See our Ramayana trail tour and Ramayana trail in Sri Lanka.

6. Hike World's End at Horton Plains

Horton Plains National Park is about an hour's drive from Nuwara Eliya. The circular walk to World's End, where the land drops steeply away, and Baker's Falls takes about three to four hours. Leave very early, around 5 am, to reach World's End before the mist rolls in. Horton Plains is part of the Central Highlands of Sri Lanka World Heritage Site. See Horton Plains and World's End.

7. See Lover's Leap waterfall

Lover's Leap is a waterfall a short drive from town, reached by a walk through tea estates. Local legend tells of two lovers who jumped from the top. The walk is short but can be slippery after rain.

8. Explore the colonial town

Nuwara Eliya's colonial past is still visible in its buildings: the red-brick post office, old hotels and clubs, and the golf course. Walk around the town centre to see them, and stop for afternoon tea at a colonial hotel.

9. Visit farms around Ambewela

On the road towards Horton Plains, the Ambewela area has dairy farms and green pastures, sometimes compared to New Zealand. You can also find strawberry farms around Nuwara Eliya, where you can try fresh strawberries and desserts.

10. Ride the scenic train

The scenic hill country railway passes through Nanu Oya station, about 8 km from Nuwara Eliya. At the time of writing (November 2026), the Nanu Oya to Ella section has been running since June 2026, while services from Kandy have been affected. Check the current status. See Ella to Nuwara Eliya and our train tour.

11. See waterfalls on the road from Kandy

On the drive from Kandy, the road passes Ramboda Falls and other waterfalls cascading down the hillsides. See waterfalls in Sri Lanka.

12. Buy fresh vegetables at the market

Nuwara Eliya is one of Sri Lanka's main vegetable-growing areas, and the market is full of carrots, leeks, cabbages and potatoes grown in the hills around town.

Best time to visit

Nuwara Eliya can be visited all year, but it's cool and often misty. It's usually driest from about January to April. April is the busiest month, when Sri Lankans celebrate the New Year season in the hills and hotels fill quickly. Bring warm clothes whatever the month. See the best time to visit Sri Lanka and Sinhala and Tamil New Year.

Weather and what to wear

Days are usually mild and nights can be chilly. Pack:

  • A warm jumper or fleece
  • A light rain jacket
  • Long trousers
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • A hat and sunscreen, as the sun is strong at altitude

See our Sri Lanka packing list.

Food to try

Try a warming rice and curry, fresh hill country vegetables, strawberries and cream, and a pot of high-grown tea. Some colonial hotels serve afternoon tea with scones and sandwiches. See Sri Lankan food to try.

Nuwara Eliya with children

Children often enjoy boat rides and pony rides at Gregory Lake, the strawberry farms and the cool weather. Bring warm layers, especially for an early start to Horton Plains. See Sri Lanka with kids.

Nuwara Eliya for couples

The cool climate, fireplaces and tea estate bungalows make Nuwara Eliya a romantic stop on a honeymoon. See our honeymoon tour.

A short history

British planters arrived in the 19th century and turned the hills into a cool retreat, with a racecourse, golf course, clubs and English-style gardens. Coffee was planted first, then replaced by tea after disease destroyed the coffee crop. Today, tea estates still cover the hills, and the town's colonial character remains.

Responsible travel in tea country

  • Ask before photographing tea pluckers, and respect their work.
  • Stay on paths in national parks.
  • Avoid plastic, especially at Horton Plains, where it's restricted.

See our responsible travel guide.

The April season

In April, Nuwara Eliya becomes the holiday capital of Sri Lanka. Families come from all over the island for the Sinhala and Tamil New Year, and the town hosts events such as horse racing, flower shows and motor races. It's lively and fun, but it's also the busiest and most expensive time of year, so book well ahead.

Tea country etiquette

Tea pluckers work long hours on steep slopes. If you'd like a photo, ask first, and consider buying tea from the estate shop to support the estate. Stay on paths, and don't pick leaves.

Day trips from Nuwara Eliya

  • Horton Plains: World's End and Baker's Falls.
  • Haputale and Lipton's Seat: sweeping views over the tea estates. See Lipton's Seat.
  • Ella: Nine Arch Bridge and Little Adam's Peak. See Nine Arch Bridge.
  • Kandy: the Temple of the Tooth and the botanical gardens.

Getting around town

The town centre is small enough to walk. For Hakgala, the Seetha Amman Temple, Lover's Leap and tea factories, use a tuk-tuk or your driver. Roads around Nuwara Eliya are steep and winding, so allow extra time.

Rainy-day ideas

If it rains, visit a tea factory, enjoy afternoon tea at a colonial hotel, explore the market or relax by a fireplace. Rain often clears by late afternoon.

Nuwara Eliya on a budget

Many of the best things to do are free or cheap: walking around town, Victoria Park, the market and the views. Guesthouses are cheaper than colonial hotels, and local restaurants serve generous rice and curry at low prices. Travel outside April for lower hotel rates.

Is Nuwara Eliya worth visiting?

Yes. It's a complete change from the heat of the coast and the Cultural Triangle, with tea, gardens and cool mountain air.

Hiking around Nuwara Eliya

Besides Horton Plains, there are walks through tea estates, to waterfalls and up nearby hills such as Single Tree Hill, with views over the town. Ask locally about paths, as some cross private estates. See hiking in Sri Lanka.

Getting around Nuwara Eliya

Tuk-tuks wait near the town centre and Gregory Lake. For longer trips, such as Horton Plains, book a driver or jeep the evening before, as you'll leave very early in the morning, before sunrise.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Packing only summer clothes. Nights can be cold.
  • Leaving late for Horton Plains. The mist often rolls in by mid-morning.
  • Visiting in April without booking. Hotels fill quickly.
  • Rushing through in one afternoon. Stay at least one night.
