By private car: the easiest way
A private car with a driver is the most comfortable way to travel from the plains to the hills. Your driver picks you up at your hotel in Sigiriya, Habarana or Dambulla and drops you at your hotel in Nuwara Eliya, stopping wherever you like.
The route
From Sigiriya, the road heads south to Dambulla, then through Naula and Matale, a town known for its spice gardens, to Kandy. From Kandy, the road passes Peradeniya and Gampola, then climbs steadily through tea estates, past Ramboda Falls and a series of hairpin bends, to Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka's highest town. The last part of the drive is slow and winding, but the views are wonderful.
Why choose a private car?
- Door-to-door travel with your luggage
- Time to stop at temples, spice gardens, tea factories and waterfalls
- A warm car for the cool hills, and an air-conditioned one for the hot plains
- A driver who knows the mountain roads
You can book a single transfer, or include this journey in a trip with a private driver.
Best stops between Sigiriya and Nuwara Eliya
Dambulla Cave Temple
Just south of Sigiriya, the Dambulla Cave Temple has five caves filled with Buddha statues and painted ceilings. If you haven't visited yet, it makes a perfect first stop. Allow about an hour and a half.
A spice garden near Matale
The road between Dambulla and Kandy is lined with spice gardens, where guides show you cinnamon, cardamom, pepper and nutmeg. Some visits end with a sales pitch for oils and creams, so feel free to just look. See spice gardens in Sri Lanka.
Kandy
In Kandy, you can visit the Temple of the Tooth, Sri Lanka's most important Buddhist temple, and walk around Kandy Lake. It also makes a good lunch stop. See the best things to do in Kandy.
Peradeniya Botanical Gardens
Just outside Kandy, the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens are famous for their giant trees, palm avenues and orchid house. An hour here is lovely, but it makes for a long day if you also see Kandy.
A tea factory near Ramboda
On the climb to Nuwara Eliya, several large tea factories welcome visitors for a short tour and tasting. See tea experiences in Sri Lanka and our tea country guide.
Ramboda Falls
Ramboda Falls tumbles down the hillside close to the road. You can see it from viewpoints or walk a little closer. See waterfalls in Sri Lanka.
Should you split the journey?
Five hours of driving plus sightseeing is a long day. Many travellers prefer to spend a night in Kandy, see the city and the Temple of the Tooth properly, then continue to Nuwara Eliya the next morning. See our guides to getting from Kandy to Sigiriya, which covers the first part in the other direction, and from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya.
By bus
There is no direct bus from Sigiriya to Nuwara Eliya. A typical journey looks like this:
- Sigiriya to Dambulla: take a local bus or tuk-tuk.
- Dambulla to Kandy: take a bus south to Kandy.
- Kandy to Nuwara Eliya: change to a bus to Nuwara Eliya.
Expect six to seven hours or more. Buses are crowded, the mountain road is slow, and there is little space for large bags.
Can you take the train?
Not directly. Sigiriya has no railway station, and the station for Nuwara Eliya is Nanu Oya, about 10 km from town. At the time of writing (October 2026), the Kandy end of the hill country railway is closed for repairs after Cyclone Ditwah in late 2025, while the scenic section from Nanu Oya (near Nuwara Eliya) to Ella has been running again since June 2026. Check the current status before you plan.
This means the best plan is to travel by road to Nuwara Eliya, then take the train from Nanu Oya to Ella later in your trip. See our guide to the Kandy to Ella train and our train tour.
When to travel
You can make this journey all year. The hill country is usually clearest from about January to April. Mornings are clearer than afternoons, when mist often builds in the hills, so leave Sigiriya early. April is a busy month in Nuwara Eliya, with many Sri Lankan holidaymakers, so book hotels early. Read our guide to the best time to visit Sri Lanka.

Continuing your journey

Weather and what to wear
Sigiriya is often around 30°C or more in the afternoon, while Nuwara Eliya, at about 1,900 metres, can be cold in the evening, especially from about December to February. Dress in layers for the drive: a T-shirt for the morning and a fleece or warm jacket for the afternoon. Rain can arrive quickly in the hills, so a light rain jacket is useful all year. See our Sri Lanka packing list.
Travelling with children
The winding road above Kandy can make children travel sick. Sit them at the front where possible, plan regular stops, and give them light snacks rather than a heavy meal before the climb. The tea factory and waterfall stops are usually popular with children. See Sri Lanka with kids.
Food on the way
Kandy has plenty of places for lunch, from simple rice and curry restaurants to cafés near the lake. In the hills, tea factory cafés serve tea, cakes and light meals with views over the estates. Many roadside stalls along the climb sell fresh vegetables, strawberries in season and corn. Ask your driver for a favourite stop. See Sri Lankan food to try.
Photo stops
The best photos come on the climb above Kandy: rows of tea bushes on steep slopes, tea pluckers at work, and Ramboda Falls framed by green hills. Ask your driver to stop at a safe viewpoint, and always ask before photographing people.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Trying to see everything in one day. Choose two or three stops, or spend a night in Kandy.
- Planning around the Kandy train. It is closed at the time of writing. Travel by road.
- Forgetting warm clothes. The temperature drops a lot as you climb.
- Arriving after dark. The final mountain road is narrow and winding.
