By private car: the easiest way

A private car is the most comfortable way to travel up into tea country. Your driver picks you up at your hotel in Kandy and takes you to your hotel in Nuwara Eliya, with stops agreed in your route and quote.

The route

From Kandy, the road heads south past Peradeniya and Gampola, then climbs steadily into the hills. The higher you go, the cooler the air becomes and the greener the views, with tea bushes covering the slopes as far as you can see. Near Ramboda, the road passes waterfalls and a series of hairpin bends before the final climb to Nuwara Eliya, a high-altitude Sri Lankan town.

Why choose a private car?

  • Door-to-door travel with your luggage
  • Time to stop at tea factories, waterfalls and viewpoints
  • A comfortable ride on a winding mountain road
  • No need to change at Nanu Oya

You can book a single transfer, or include this journey in a trip with a private driver.

Just outside Kandy, the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens are famous for their giant trees, palm avenues and orchid house. An hour or two here is a lovely start to the day.

A short detour from Gampola, Ambuluwawa Tower is a spiral tower on a hilltop with views in every direction. The top section is narrow and exposed, so it is not for anyone afraid of heights.

Ramboda Falls

Ramboda Falls tumbles down the hillside near the road. You can see it from viewpoints along the way or walk closer for a better look.

A tea factory

Several large tea factories and tea centres along this road welcome visitors. On a short tour, you can see how fresh leaves are withered, rolled, dried and sorted, then taste the tea in a café with views over the estates. Read more about tea experiences in Sri Lanka.

Kotmale reservoir viewpoints

The road passes above the Kotmale area, where viewpoints look across hills and water. On a clear day, it is one of the most beautiful parts of the drive.

By bus

Direct buses run between Kandy and Nuwara Eliya throughout the day. They leave from the bus stand in central Kandy and arrive at the bus station in the centre of Nuwara Eliya. The journey usually takes around three and a half to four hours.

  • Air-conditioned buses are more comfortable than ordinary buses.
  • The road is winding, so sit near the front if you get travel sick.
  • Space for large bags is limited.

By train

The hill country railway line runs from Kandy up into the mountains. The station for Nuwara Eliya is Nanu Oya, about 10 km from the town centre. From Nanu Oya, a tuk-tuk takes around 20 minutes to reach Nuwara Eliya. When the line is running, the train journey from Kandy to Nanu Oya usually takes around three and a half to five hours, depending on the service.

Current status

Check current operating sections with Sri Lanka Railways rather than assuming a through journey from Kandy. A road transfer to Nuwara Eliya and an onward Nanu Oya-to-Ella rail journey may be an option if that section is operating and seats are available. Check the current status with Sri Lanka Railways before you plan. Read our guide to the Kandy to Ella train.

When to travel

You can make this journey all year. The hill country is usually clearest from about January to April, when views from the road and viewpoints are at their best. Mornings are usually clearer than afternoons, when mist and cloud often build. April is a busy month in Nuwara Eliya, with many Sri Lankan holidaymakers, so book hotels early. Read our guide to the best time to visit Sri Lanka.

Continuing your journey

What affects the cost of a private transfer

The cost depends on the size of the vehicle, any stops you add and the season. If you travel with one of our drivers for your whole trip, this journey is simply one day of it. Ask us for a quote that includes everything. See how to book.

Travel tips

  • Leave in the morning for the clearest views.
  • Pack a warm layer. Nuwara Eliya can be cold, especially at night.
  • Ask a pharmacist about motion-sickness options if you need them for the winding road.
  • Plan your train from Nanu Oya if you want to ride the scenic section to Ella.
  • Carry cash for tea factory cafés and small shops. See money in Sri Lanka.

A sample day

  • Morning: visit the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens soon after they open.
  • Late morning: drive south and begin the climb into the hills, stopping at a viewpoint above Kotmale.
  • Midday: stop at a tea factory near Ramboda for a tour, a tasting and lunch with a view.
  • Afternoon: see Ramboda Falls, then continue to Nuwara Eliya.
  • Late afternoon: walk around Gregory Lake before the evening cool sets in.

Weather and what to wear

Nuwara Eliya is much cooler than Kandy because of its height. Days can be pleasantly warm in the sun, but mornings and evenings are cold, especially from about December to February. Bring a fleece or warm jacket, long trousers and closed shoes. Rain can arrive quickly in the hills, so a light rain jacket is useful all year. See our Sri Lanka packing list.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Planning around the Kandy train. Check the operating status of the Kandy-to-Nanu Oya section before planning around it. Keep a road alternative and confirm any onward train from Nanu Oya.
  • Underpacking. Nuwara Eliya is cold at night. Bring a warm layer.
  • Rushing the drive. The road is the highlight. Allow time for a tea factory and the waterfalls.

Nanu Oya is a rail connection, not the town itself

Nuwara Eliya requires onward road transport from Nanu Oya if you arrive by rail. Confirm current operating services, seat availability and a pickup at the actual station. Train times should not be treated as a guaranteed connection to a fixed afternoon tour; a road alternative is worth discussing if your schedule is tight.

A car route allows tea-country stops, but factories have their own visiting arrangements and may not demonstrate every production stage during your visit. Agree the stop, opening arrangements and any admission charge rather than assuming all roadside factories are open. Add viewing time to the drive estimate and allow for winding roads, rain and personal comfort.

What to include in a transfer quote request

Give the exact travel date, pickup and drop-off addresses, number of passengers and luggage. If you need a child seat, extra space, an accessible vehicle or a surfboard carrying arrangement, ask specifically and wait for confirmation. State whether you want a direct transfer, sightseeing stops or several days of driver hire; these are different services and need different quotes.

Ask whether fuel, tolls, parking, agreed waiting time and any additional stops are included, without assuming a universal policy. Site tickets, safari jeeps and guided visits are separate unless listed. For an airport connection, share the flight number and airline check-in requirements and allow an appropriate buffer. Driving times are planning estimates affected by traffic, weather, stops and the final hotel location.
