20 Best Things to Do in Ella, Sri Lanka

Quick answer

The best things to do in Ella are watching a train cross Nine Arch Bridge, walking up Little Adam's Peak at sunrise, hiking Ella Rock, viewing Ravana Falls from a safe roadside viewpoint, touring a tea factory and arriving on the famous train from Kandy. Ella is a small mountain town in Sri Lanka's hill country, surrounded by tea estates, waterfalls and views across the Ella Gap. For an overview of the town, including where to stay and how to get there, see our Ella travel guide. This list focuses on the best experiences, so you can choose the ones that suit you.

Classic sights and walks

1. Watch a train cross Nine Arch Bridge

Nine Arch Bridge is Ella's most famous sight: a stone railway viaduct built in the early twentieth century and set in thick jungle. The best moment is watching a blue train curve across it. Train times change, so ask your hotel or driver for the day's schedule and arrive a little early. Reach the bridge using public paths and designated viewpoints, not the railway line. Stay off the tracks and follow railway staff instructions.

2. Walk up Little Adam's Peak

Little Adam's Peak is the easiest and most rewarding walk in Ella. A gentle path climbs through a tea estate to a grassy ridge with wide views. Most people reach the top in under an hour. Go at sunrise for soft light and cool air, or late afternoon for golden views.

3. Hike Ella Rock

Ella Rock is a bigger challenge, with a longer and steeper climb to a viewpoint high above the Ella Gap. Allow around three to four hours for the round trip. The route is not always well marked, so many hikers go with a local guide. Start early, as clouds often build by late morning.

4. Arrive on the Kandy to Ella train

Check current operating sections before booking: the existing train guide explains the road-and-rail alternative via Nanu Oya. The hill country railway line is often called one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world. The train winds slowly through tea estates, tunnels and forest before arriving in Ella. Seats sell out in busy months, so book early. Read our guide to the Kandy to Ella train, or see Kandy to Ella by road if you prefer to drive.

5. See Ravana Falls safely

Ravana Falls tumbles over rocks just beside the road from Ella to Wellawaya, a short drive from town. It is most impressive after rain. Enjoy the waterfall from a safe viewpoint. Do not enter fast-flowing water, climb wet rocks or ignore local restrictions.

6. Climb to Ravana Cave

Ravana Cave is linked by legend to the Ramayana story. A steep stairway leads up to the cave, with views over the valley. It is a short but sweaty climb. Read about the wider Ramayana Trail in Sri Lanka.

7. Watch the sunrise over the Ella Gap

The Ella Gap is a deep notch in the mountains, with views all the way to the southern plains on clear days. Many hotels and guesthouses face it, so you may be able to enjoy the sunrise from your balcony.

Tea experiences

8. Tour a tea factory

Ella sits in the Uva tea region. A visit to a working factory, such as the Uva Halpewatte factory near town, shows you how fresh leaves become black tea: withering, rolling, fermenting, drying and sorting. Most tours end with a tasting. Read more about tea experiences in Sri Lanka.

9. Walk through a tea estate

Early morning is the best time to see tea pickers at work on the steep slopes. Many walking paths around Ella cross estate land, including the route to Little Adam's Peak. Please ask before taking close-up photos of workers.

10. Visit Lipton's Seat (day trip)

Lipton's Seat is a famous viewpoint above the Dambatenne tea estate near Haputale, about an hour or more from Ella by car. It is said to be where Sir Thomas Lipton surveyed his tea estates. Go early for the clearest views, as mist often rolls in later in the day. Our tea country guide covers the region in more depth.

Adventure and activities

11. See the Demodara loop

Near Ella, the railway makes a full loop around a hill and passes under itself at Demodara, an impressive piece of early railway engineering. Train fans can watch it from the hillside or ride through it on the train.

12. Ride the Flying Ravana zip line

The Flying Ravana zip line runs over tea estate land on the road towards Little Adam's Peak. It is one of the longest zip lines in Sri Lanka and a fun choice for families with older children and anyone who likes a thrill. Check age and weight limits before you go.

13. Take a cooking class

Several homes and small restaurants in Ella run Sri Lankan cooking classes. You learn to make rice and curry, sambol and roti, then eat what you cook. It is a great rainy-day activity. See Sri Lankan food to try and food and cooking experiences.

14. Relax with an ayurveda treatment or yoga

After a few days of hiking, an ayurvedic massage is a good way to rest tired legs. Several places in Ella offer treatments and yoga classes. Read our guide to ayurveda in Sri Lanka.

How many days do you need in Ella?

Two to three nights is ideal. That gives you time for Nine Arch Bridge, Little Adam's Peak and Ella Rock, plus a tea factory or a day trip. If you only have one night, focus on Little Adam's Peak at sunrise and Nine Arch Bridge. For a day-by-day plan, read our guide to two days in Ella or join an Ella day tour.

Best time to visit Ella

Ella can be visited all year, but the weather in the hills changes quickly. The clearest views are usually from about January to April. Mornings are usually clearer than afternoons, so plan hikes early. Bring a light rain jacket and a warm layer for cool evenings. Our best time to visit Sri Lanka guide explains the seasons across the island.

Tips for visiting Ella

  • Start early. Viewpoints are clearest and paths are quieter in the morning.
  • Wear good shoes. Paths can be steep and slippery after rain.
  • Respect the railway. Stay off the railway tracks at all times and use designated paths and viewpoints.
  • Book the train early. Reserved seats on the hill country line sell out in busy months.
  • Carry cash. Some small cafés and tuk-tuk drivers only take cash.

Getting to Ella

Most travellers arrive by train from Kandy or Nuwara Eliya, or by car with a private driver. From Ella, it is easy to continue to Yala, Udawalawe or the south coast beaches. If you would like Ella as part of a longer trip, see our 10-day Sri Lanka tour or our Sri Lanka train tour.

A two-day Ella plan with weather alternatives

Use one clear morning for a walk suited to your fitness, with a later tea visit or designated Nine Arch Bridge viewpoint. Leave another day for a longer hike or a chosen excursion rather than trying to complete every activity. Rain, cloud and muddy trails can change the order; a list of twenty ideas is not a requirement to attempt all of them.

Before Ella Rock or other less obvious routes, confirm lawful access and use reliable local guidance if you are unsure of the path. Stay off railway tracks, avoid wet waterfall rocks and ask about current trail conditions. Zip lines and other adventure activities have age, weight, health and equipment rules; family popularity is not proof that an activity suits every child.

Turn your activity choices into a workable holiday

Choose two or three priorities from the guide before deciding how many nights to stay. Add arrival and departure travel separately and leave time for meals, rest and weather changes. A private driver helps with road connections; guided visits, boat trips, lessons and activity tickets need their own confirmation. If you already have hotels, share their exact addresses so suggested days do not depend on unrealistic pickup distances.

Ask for either a local excursion, transport for selected days or a complete private holiday. Make that distinction clear in your WhatsApp request and include dates, travellers, children’s ages and your preferred pace. The written quote should identify the actual services and exclusions. Avoid booking a fixed-time activity immediately after a long transfer, and do not treat wildlife encounters, clear views or sea conditions as guaranteed.

Little Adam's Peak is the shorter walk, but has steps and uneven terrain and is not suitable for every mobility level. Ella Rock is longer and harder, with bigger views, and suits fit hikers.

No. Choose walks for fitness, age, mobility and current weather. Little Adam’s Peak still has steps and uneven ground; longer routes may need local guidance.
