Quick answer
The easiest way to get from Ella to Mirissa is by private car, which takes about three and a half to four and a half hours depending on the route and stops. By bus, the journey usually takes six hours or more and involves at least one change, often in Wellawaya or Matara. There is no direct train, because the railway does not connect the hill country to the south coast without going through Colombo. Many travellers break the journey with a safari in Udawalawe or Yala.

By private car: the easiest option
Travelling by private car is the most comfortable and flexible way to make this journey. Your driver picks you up at your hotel in Ella and drops you at your hotel in Mirissa, and you can stop wherever you like along the way.
The route
The road from Ella first winds down through the mountains towards Wellawaya, passing Ravana Falls. These first bends are slow and twisty, so sit at the front if you get car sick. From Wellawaya, the road crosses the flatter southern plains. Depending on the route your driver chooses, you can then join the Southern Expressway for the last part of the journey towards Matara and Mirissa, or follow the coast road through Tangalle.
Why choose a private car?
- Door-to-door travel with your luggage
- Freedom to stop for photos, lunch or sightseeing
- An air-conditioned vehicle on a hot day
- The option to add a safari or temple visit on the way
You can book a car for this transfer alone, or as part of a longer trip with a private driver.
Best stops between Ella and Mirissa

One of the advantages of travelling by car is turning a transfer into a day of sightseeing. Popular stops include:
Ravana Falls
A short drive from Ella, Ravana Falls is right beside the road. Stop for a few minutes to see the falls and stretch your legs.
Buduruwagala
Near Wellawaya, Buduruwagala has ancient figures carved into a huge granite rock, including a very tall standing Buddha. It is a quiet, atmospheric stop that takes around 30 to 45 minutes.
An Udawalawe safari
Udawalawe National Park is one of the best places in Sri Lanka to see wild elephants at any time of year. A morning or afternoon jeep safari fits well into this journey, turning it into a full day. Read more about safaris in Sri Lanka.
A Yala safari
If you leave Ella very early, you can detour to Yala National Park for a safari and then continue to the coast, or stay a night near Yala. See our guide to getting from Ella to Yala. Parts of Yala can close for a few weeks in the peak dry season, so check before you plan this.
Tangalle and Hiriketiya
If you follow the coast road, you can stop for lunch and a swim at Tangalle or the small bay at Hiriketiya before the final stretch to Mirissa.
By bus: the cheapest option
Buses are very cheap but slow and crowded, and there is no single bus that goes directly from Ella to Mirissa. A typical journey looks like this:
- Ella to Wellawaya: take a local bus down the mountain road to Wellawaya.
- Wellawaya to Matara: change to a bus heading towards Matara on the south coast. Some services may go via Tangalle.
- Matara to Mirissa: take a short local bus or a tuk-tuk along the coast to Mirissa.
Expect the whole journey to take six hours or more, depending on connections. Buses can be very full, and there is little space for large suitcases. Travel early in the day so you are not changing buses after dark.
By shared shuttle van
Some companies run shared tourist vans between Ella and the south coast, picking up from hotels or a central point in Ella. They are faster and more comfortable than public buses and cheaper than a private car for solo travellers. Some include a safari stop. Check the pick-up point, luggage limits and where you will be dropped in Mirissa before you book.
By train: not a good choice for this route
There is no direct railway line from Ella to Mirissa. To go by train, you would have to travel all the way to Colombo and then change to the coastal line heading south. This takes most of a day, or longer, and is only worth it if you specifically want both train journeys. For most travellers, the road is much faster.
If you love train travel, enjoy the famous hill country line on the way to Ella instead. Read our guide to the Kandy to Ella train.
By tuk-tuk
Some travellers hire a tuk-tuk for the whole journey. It is an adventure, but it is a long, hot and bumpy ride, and there is limited space for luggage. Consider journey length, luggage, weather and personal comfort; favour daylight travel and adequate rest.
When to travel
You can make this journey at any time of year, but the beach season at Mirissa matters more than the road. The south coast is at its best from about November to April, when the sea is calm and good for swimming and whale watching. Between about May and October, the sea on the south coast can be rough. Read more about whale watching in Sri Lanka and the best time to visit Sri Lanka.
On the road itself, try to start in the morning so you arrive before dark. The mountain section can be misty or wet, especially in the afternoon.
What to do when you arrive in Mirissa

- Bring water and snacks, especially if you are taking buses.
- Carry cash for entrance fees, safaris and roadside stops. See money in Sri Lanka.
- Book safaris in advance if you want a stop at Udawalawe or Yala.

Where to stay in Mirissa
Mirissa has places to stay for every budget, from simple guesthouses near the beach to boutique hotels on the headlands. Staying near the main beach puts you close to cafés and nightlife, while hotels on the quieter ends of the bay or in the hills behind are more peaceful. If you prefer a calmer base, nearby bays such as Talalla and Hiriketiya are good alternatives. Our guide to where to stay in Sri Lanka covers the whole south coast.
What affects the cost of the journey
The cost of a private transfer from Ella to Mirissa depends on:
- The size of the vehicle, from a car for two to a van for a larger group
- Whether you add stops, such as a safari or a temple visit
- Highway tolls if your driver uses the expressway
- The season, as demand is highest from December to March

Descending from Ella to the south coast
The route leaves the hills for the dry lowlands and then the coast. Treat the published driving estimate as time in transit, not a promise for a day with sightseeing. Ravana Falls can be a brief viewpoint stop, while a safari changes the journey into a separate activity day. If your main priority is arriving for a restful beach afternoon, keep stops modest.
Public transport involves several stages, commonly via Wellawaya and Matara. Check the connections on your travel day, keep luggage manageable and allow time for the final journey to your Mirissa hotel. The hill-country railway does not provide a direct southbound connection to Mirissa; travelling back through Colombo is a very different, much longer itinerary.
What to include in a transfer quote request
Give the exact travel date, pickup and drop-off addresses, number of passengers and luggage. If you need a child seat, extra space, an accessible vehicle or a surfboard carrying arrangement, ask specifically and wait for confirmation. State whether you want a direct transfer, sightseeing stops or several days of driver hire; these are different services and need different quotes.
Ask whether fuel, tolls, parking, agreed waiting time and any additional stops are included, without assuming a universal policy. Site tickets, safari jeeps and guided visits are separate unless listed. For an airport connection, share the flight number and airline check-in requirements and allow an appropriate buffer. Driving times are planning estimates affected by traffic, weather, stops and the final hotel location.
