Where do you stay for Yala?
Yala National Park itself has no towns inside it. Most visitors stay nearby and join a jeep safari from there. The main bases are:
- Tissamaharama (Tissa): the largest town near Yala, with many hotels, guesthouses and safari operators. It has a large ancient stupa and a calm lake.
- Kirinda: a small fishing village by the sea, closer to the park entrance and quieter than Tissa.
- Hotels and safari camps on the park edge: these range from tented camps to comfortable lodges, with some of the shortest drives to the gate.
Your choice depends on budget and style. Our where to stay in Sri Lanka guide covers the options in more detail.
By private car: the easiest way
A private car is the most comfortable way to travel from Ella to Yala, and it makes it easy to fit an afternoon safari into the same day.
The route
From Ella, the road winds down the mountains past Ravana Falls to Wellawaya. These first bends are slow, so take motion-sickness tablets if you need them. From Wellawaya, the road crosses flatter countryside towards Tissamaharama. Your driver will take you straight to your hotel or safari camp.
Why choose a private car?
- Door-to-door travel with your luggage
- Time to stop at Ravana Falls or Buduruwagala on the way
- An easy start for an afternoon safari
- Flexibility to continue to the south coast after your safari
You can book a single transfer or include it in a longer trip with a private driver.
Best stops between Ella and Yala
Ravana Falls
Ravana Falls is right beside the road a short distance from Ella. Stop for a quick photo and a break.
Buduruwagala
Near Wellawaya, Buduruwagala has ancient Buddhist figures carved into a granite rock face, including a very tall standing Buddha. It is a peaceful stop that takes around 30 to 45 minutes.
Kataragama
Kataragama, close to Tissamaharama, is one of Sri Lanka's most important pilgrimage towns, sacred to Buddhists, Hindus and Muslims. Evening ceremonies at the temple complex are atmospheric. Read our guide to places to visit in Kataragama.
By bus
There is usually no direct bus from Ella to Yala. A typical journey looks like this:
- Ella to Wellawaya: take a local bus down the mountain road.
- Wellawaya to Tissamaharama: change to a bus heading towards Tissamaharama or Kataragama.
- To your hotel: take a tuk-tuk from the bus stand in Tissa.
Expect the journey to take around four hours or more, depending on connections. Buses are cheap but can be crowded, with little space for large bags. Travel early so you arrive in daylight.
By tuk-tuk or shared van
Some travellers hire a tuk-tuk for the whole journey. It is an enjoyable ride but slow and hot, with limited space for luggage. Shared tourist vans also run between Ella and the Yala area. Check pick-up points, timings and luggage limits before you book.
Planning your Yala safari
Morning or afternoon?
Yala safaris usually run in the early morning and in the afternoon, when animals are most active. The early morning is often best for leopards, but afternoon safaris are also excellent and fit perfectly after the drive from Ella. A full-day safari is possible for keen wildlife watchers.
Booking a jeep
Safaris are run in open jeeps with a driver and a tracker. Jeeps are usually booked through your hotel or a local operator in Tissamaharama. We can arrange this for you. Read more about safaris in Sri Lanka and our full Yala safari guide.
What will you see?
Yala National Park is Sri Lanka's best-known park for leopards. You may also see elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, spotted deer, water buffalo, peacocks and many birds. Sightings are never guaranteed, but the variety is excellent. See our guide to leopard safaris in Sri Lanka.
Park closures
Yala blocks and entrances can have seasonal closures or temporary restrictions. Check current park notices for the dates and access points in your itinerary. If Yala is closed, nearby Bundala or Udawalawe are good alternatives.
Yala or Udawalawe?
If you are short on time, you might wonder whether to choose Yala or Udawalawe. Yala is better for leopards and overall variety. Udawalawe is the most reliable park for elephants and is often quieter. Our comparison of Yala vs Udawalawe vs Wilpattu explains the differences.
When to go
The best time for Yala is often from about February to July, when water becomes scarce and animals gather at waterholes. Check current park access notices rather than assuming a fixed closure period. Ella itself is clearest from about January to April. Read our guide to the best time to visit Sri Lanka.

Travel tips
- Leave Ella in the morning so you are ready for an afternoon safari.
- Bring a hat, sunscreen and water for the open jeep.
- Wear neutral colours on safari and avoid bright clothing.
- Bring binoculars if you have them.
- Carry cash for park tickets and tips. See our entry fees guide.
- Read our guide on how to get to Yala if you are coming from somewhere other than Ella.
Safari etiquette
A good safari is quiet and patient. To make the most of your time in the park, and to protect the animals:
- Stay inside the jeep at all times, except at official stops.
- Keep your voice low and switch your phone to silent.
- Never feed animals or throw anything from the jeep.
- Ask your driver to keep a respectful distance and not to crowd a leopard or elephant.
- Take all your rubbish out of the park with you.

Combining Yala with nearby sights
The area around Yala has more to offer than safaris alone. Bundala National Park is excellent for birds, especially waterbirds, and is a short drive away. Kumana National Park, further east, is quieter and known for its nesting birds. Read about bird watching in Sri Lanka. Tissamaharama itself has an ancient stupa and a peaceful lake, and Kataragama's evening ceremonies are memorable.
Book the transfer and safari as separate parts of the day
A transfer estimate to Tissamaharama is not the time needed to reach a particular park gate and begin a safari. Share your accommodation and intended entrance so pickup, jeep meeting point and park access can be checked. An afternoon safari needs an agreed latest arrival time, not simply an early departure from Ella.
A night near the park gives more room for delays and a calmer start than fitting a transfer, safari and onward coastal drive into one day. Confirm park tickets, jeep capacity, guiding, meals and whether luggage remains securely at accommodation or in the transfer vehicle. Yala’s blocks and entrances can have different restrictions; ask about current notices rather than assuming a fixed annual closure.
What to include in a transfer quote request
Give the exact travel date, pickup and drop-off addresses, number of passengers and luggage. If you need a child seat, extra space, an accessible vehicle or a surfboard carrying arrangement, ask specifically and wait for confirmation. State whether you want a direct transfer, sightseeing stops or several days of driver hire; these are different services and need different quotes.
Ask whether fuel, tolls, parking, agreed waiting time and any additional stops are included, without assuming a universal policy. Site tickets, safari jeeps and guided visits are separate unless listed. For an airport connection, share the flight number and airline check-in requirements and allow an appropriate buffer. Driving times are planning estimates affected by traffic, weather, stops and the final hotel location.
