Quick answer
For leopards, choose Yala (busiest) or Wilpattu (quieter). For elephants, consider Udawalawe, but sightings are never guaranteed. For huge elephant herds, choose Minneriya during "the Gathering" in the dry season. The best Sri Lanka safari is the one that fits your route and travel month.

Yala: the leopard park
Yala is Sri Lanka's most famous safari park, with a high density of leopards plus elephants, crocodiles and sloth bears. It's the busiest park, so expect other jeeps at big sightings. Read our Yala safari guide or book a Yala safari tour.
Udawalawe: the elephant park
Udawalawe's open grasslands around the reservoir make it one of the most reliable places in Asia to see wild elephants. It's an easy stop between Ella and the south coast, and good for families. Book an Udawalawe safari.
Wilpattu: the quiet wilderness
Wilpattu is Sri Lanka's largest national park, known for its natural lakes ("villus"), leopards and sloth bears. It has far fewer jeeps than Yala, so it's ideal if you dislike crowds. It fits trips that include Anuradhapura or Kalpitiya.
Minneriya: the elephant gathering
In the dry season, elephants come to Minneriya's reservoir in large numbers, a sight known as "the Gathering". It's an easy afternoon safari from Sigiriya.

- Travellers who hate crowds: Wilpattu.
- Cultural Triangle trips: Minneriya.

Check current park rules
Yala closures and access vary by year. Check DWC notices and day-visitor permits for your dates; do not assume another block is open. Follow SLTDA safari guidance: give wildlife right of way, follow park routes and speed limits, never feed animals, and avoid disturbance.
