Quick answer
The best places for a leopard safari in Sri Lanka are Yala National Park (is known for leopard sightings) and Wilpattu National Park (quieter, fewer jeeps). Go in the dry season, roughly February to July for Yala, and take an early-morning safari for your best chance.

The Sri Lankan leopard is the island's top predator and lives only in Sri Lanka. Without lions or tigers to compete with, leopards here are often active in daylight, which makes Sri Lanka a rewarding place to look for them.
Best parks for leopards
| Park | Leopard chances | Crowds | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yala | Known leopard habitat; no guarantee | Busy | Check current DWC access notices |
| Wilpattu | Good | Quiet | Larger park, so a full day helps |
| Horton Plains | Rare | – | Leopards live here, but sightings are unusual |
Best time for a leopard safari
- Months: the dry season. Waterholes shrink and animals are easier to find, roughly February to July in Yala.
- Time of day: early morning, then late afternoon.
- Avoid: any current Yala block closure and busy local holiday weekends.
How to improve your chances
- Do two sessions or a full day. More time means more chances.
- Book a private jeep so you can wait patiently at a good spot.
- Stay close to the park to enter at opening time.
- Trust your driver. Drivers share sighting news and know the leopards' favourite rocks and trees.
Watch leopards respectfully
- Ask your jeep driver not to chase, block or crowd an animal.
- Keep quiet and stay seated in the jeep.
- Never feed wildlife or throw anything from the jeep.
- Accept that a sighting is never guaranteed. That's what makes it special.
Add a leopard safari to your trip
- Yala safari tour, as a day trip or overnight.
- Sri Lanka wildlife tour, combining Yala, Udawalawe and more.
- 14-day Sri Lanka tour, with culture, hills, safari and beach.

Check current park rules
Yala closures and access vary by year. Check DWC notices and day-visitor permits for your dates; do not assume another block is open. Follow SLTDA safari guidance: give wildlife right of way, follow park routes and speed limits, never feed animals, and avoid disturbance.
