Sri Lanka Itinerary: Plan Your Perfect Trip

The best Sri Lanka itinerary depends on how long you have, your travel month and what you love most. These sample routes are starting points; every private tour can be adjusted.

Rail update (checked 18 October 2026): Cyclone Ditwah damaged the hill-country railway in November 2025. Trains currently run between Colombo Fort and Peradeniya, and between Nanu Oya, Ella and Badulla, but not yet into Kandy station or between Kandy and Nanu Oya. We drive the closed sections and plan train rides where the line is running. Please confirm with Sri Lanka Railways before you travel. Getting around Sri Lanka

7 days: the highlights

Sigiriya and Dambulla, Kandy, the tea country and the scenic train to Ella (currently from Nanu Oya), finishing on the south coast. Full days, but a great overview.

10 days: the classic loop

Adds Polonnaruwa, an elephant or leopard safari and beach time at a more comfortable pace.

14 days: the island explorer

Adds Anuradhapura, Horton Plains, an extra night in Kandy and a longer beach finish. In the middle of the year, consider the east coast or Jaffna instead of the south.

Planning tips

Avoid trying to see everything; travel times add up. Put the hill country between the Cultural Triangle and the coast to avoid backtracking. Choose your beach by season, and check which sections of the hill-country railway are running, then book seats early in busy months.

How to choose your route

Start with your travel month, which decides the coast: south and west from roughly December to April, east from about May to September. Next, decide how much you want to move. One night per stop feels rushed, while two or three nights each lets you enjoy the hotels and recover from early starts.

Finally, choose your priorities. The Cultural Triangle, Kandy and the hill country form the core of most trips, and a safari and a beach are the usual additions.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Underestimating travel times: roads are slow, and three to four hours between regions is normal.
  • Packing too much in: build in rest days, especially after dawn starts.
  • Ignoring the monsoons: choose the right coast for your month.
  • Relying only on the train: parts of the hill-country line are closed after Cyclone Ditwah, and reserved seats sell out.
  • Leaving Colombo and Negombo off the plan: a night near the airport makes early or late flights easier.

Frequently asked questions

Which direction should I travel?

Many routes run from the airport to the Cultural Triangle, then south through Kandy and the hills to the coast. It works just as well in reverse.

Can I include the east coast?

Yes, especially from around May to September when it is usually at its best.

Should I book hotels in advance?

In peak season and around festivals, yes. We can include accommodation in your plan if you wish.
