1. Choose your dates
Your travel month decides which coast to visit. The south and west are usually best from around December to April; the east from around May to September.
2. Decide how long
A week covers the highlights; ten days to two weeks gives a more relaxed pace with beach and wildlife.
3. Pick a route
Most first trips combine the Cultural Triangle, Kandy, the hill country and one coast. Avoid backtracking by putting the hill country between the ancient cities and the beach.
4. Arrange transport
A private car and driver is the most popular choice for flexibility. The hill-country train is a highlight; check which sections are running, as part of the line is closed for repairs after Cyclone Ditwah.
5. Check entry requirements
Most visitors need an ETA or visa before arrival. Check the official government website for current rules.
6. Book the important things early
In peak months, the best hotels, safari jeeps, popular cooking classes and reserved train seats fill up first. Lock in these key pieces early, and leave the rest flexible.
7. Pack for several climates
You'll need light clothing for the coast and the Cultural Triangle, warm layers and a rain jacket for the hill country, modest clothing for temples, and good walking shoes. Bring sun protection and insect repellent.
8. Plan your budget
The main costs are accommodation, transport, entry fees, safaris and activities, and food. Sri Lanka suits a wide range of budgets, from simple guesthouses to luxury hotels. Entry fees for the major sites and national parks can add up, so include them in your plans. See our guide to entry fees.
