Coconut Tree Hill above the sea at Mirissa

When to go

Sri Lanka in December & January

December and January are among the most popular months to visit Sri Lanka, with sunshine on the south and west coasts, clear mornings in the hills and whale-watching in full swing. Here's where to go, and what to book early.

The weather in a nutshell

In December and January, the north-east monsoon brings rain to the east and north, while the south and west coasts are usually dry and sunny with calm seas. The hill country often has clear, cool mornings. The Cultural Triangle is generally pleasant, though showers are possible early in the season. Weather varies from year to year, so keep plans flexible.

Where to go

Where to avoid

Save the east coast beaches, such as Trincomalee, Nilaveli, Pasikuda and Arugam Bay, for the summer months, when they're at their best.

Christmas and New Year

The Christmas and New Year period is peak season. The best hotels, safari jeeps and train seats fill up first, so book several months ahead. Many beach hotels host festive dinners, and Colombo and Galle have a lively atmosphere.

A sample two-week winter route

Start with the Cultural Triangle and Kandy, climb into the tea country for Horton Plains and Ella, take a safari at Udawalawe or Yala, then finish with a week on the south coast with whale-watching and Galle Fort.
