Sri Lanka's south coast is a string of golden bays, fishing villages and palm-covered headlands, with a colonial fort town at one end and wild, quiet beaches at the other. From roughly December to March the sea is calm and the sun shines. Here's how to drive it slowly.
Stop 1: Galle Fort (1–2 nights)
Begin in Galle, where Dutch-era ramparts wrap around a living town of narrow streets, churches, cafés and boutiques. Walk the walls at sunset, from the clock tower to the lighthouse and Flag Rock. Staying inside the fort lets you enjoy it when the day-trippers have gone.
Stop 2: Unawatuna and Jungle Beach
A few kilometres east, Unawatuna's sheltered bay is one of the best swimming beaches on the coast in season. Walk over the headland to Jungle Beach and up to the Japanese Peace Pagoda for views back to Galle.
Stop 3: Koggala and the stilt fishermen
Between Koggala and Ahangama you'll see the famous stilt fishermen perched on poles in the shallows. Early morning is your best chance of seeing real fishing rather than posing for photographs. Koggala Lake is good for a boat trip to small islands.
Stop 4: Weligama (surf lessons)
Weligama's wide, sandy bay has gentle waves perfect for a first surf lesson. Board hire and surf schools line the beach, and more experienced surfers head to nearby reef breaks.
Stop 5: Mirissa (whales and sunsets) – 2 nights
Mirissa is the coast's liveliest small beach town and Sri Lanka's main whale-watching base. Boats leave early in the morning in season, roughly November to April, to look for blue whales and dolphins. Choose an operator that keeps a respectful distance. End the day at Coconut Tree Hill.
Stop 6: Tangalle (quiet beaches) – 2–3 nights
Further east, Tangalle's long beaches feel wild and spacious, with boutique villas and simple guesthouses. Visit the Mulkirigala rock temple inland, look out for turtles at responsible sanctuaries, and slow right down. Some beaches here have strong currents, so swim only where it's safe.
Add a safari
From Tangalle, Yala and Bundala are within easy reach for a morning safari, and Udawalawe is on the way back towards the hills. It makes a great finale to a coastal trip.
