Unawatuna is a sheltered, crescent-shaped bay just east of Galle, protected by a reef and a headland. The calm water in season makes it one of the most popular swimming beaches on the south coast.
Behind the bay is Rumassala hill. In Ramayana legend it is a piece of the Himalayas dropped by the monkey god Hanuman, which explains the unusual medicinal plants found there.
Swim and snorkel in the bay, walk over the headland to the smaller Jungle Beach, and visit the white Japanese Peace Pagoda on Rumassala for views of Galle Fort. The ramparts of Galle are only a short tuk-tuk ride away.
Unawatuna also has dive centres, yoga classes and cooking classes.
Guesthouses and small hotels line the bay and the lanes behind it. Places on the hillside are quieter than those on the beachfront.
Beach restaurants serve seafood, curries and western dishes. Many have tables right on the sand at sunset.
