Rock-cut Buddha statues at the Gal Vihara, Polonnaruwa

Itinerary

3 Days in the Cultural Triangle

The Cultural Triangle is the ancient heart of Sri Lanka: rock fortresses, painted caves, ruined royal capitals and herds of wild elephants, all within an hour or two of each other. Base yourself in one hotel near Sigiriya and you can see the best of it in three unhurried days.

Where to base yourself

Stay in or around Sigiriya, Dambulla, Habarana or Kandalama for three nights. You'll avoid packing every morning, and everything below is a short drive away.

Day 1: Sigiriya and the Dambulla caves

Climb Sigiriya Rock as early as possible, before the heat and the crowds. Walk through the water gardens, stop at the frescoes and the Mirror Wall, and climb between the giant Lion's Paws to the palace ruins on the summit. Visit the museum afterwards for context.

Rest through the middle of the day, then drive to the Dambulla cave temple in the late afternoon. Its five caves hold well over a hundred Buddha statues and walls covered with paintings.

Day 2: Polonnaruwa by bicycle and an elephant safari

Drive about an hour to Polonnaruwa, the medieval capital. Start at the museum, then explore by bicycle: the Quadrangle with its round relic house, the royal palace, and the Gal Vihara, where four serene Buddhas are carved into one granite face.

In the afternoon, join a jeep safari at Minneriya or Kaudulla, where elephants gather on the grasslands in the dry months, roughly July to October. Your driver will know which park the herds are using.

Day 3: Pidurangala sunrise and a village day

Climb Pidurangala for sunrise. The short, steep walk ends with a boulder scramble and the classic view of Sigiriya across the forest.

Spend the rest of the day slowly: a village visit with a cooking class, a bullock-cart or lake-canoe experience, or simply a swim at your hotel. With more energy, add the Ritigala forest monastery or the Aukana standing Buddha.

Want to go further back in time?

Add a fourth day for Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka's first great capital, with the sacred Bodhi tree and vast white stupas, and Mihintale nearby.

Practical tips

  • Start early and rest at midday; the ancient sites are hot and exposed.
  • Wear clothing that covers shoulders and knees for temples, and bring socks for hot stone floors.
  • Buy tickets at each site and check current prices before you go.
  • A licensed site guide brings Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura to life.
