Stops worth making on the way

  • Spice gardens near MataleWorking gardens explaining cinnamon, cardamom and Ayurvedic herbs.
  • Aluvihare Rock TempleA cave temple near Matale associated with the writing down of Buddhist scriptures.
  • Nalanda GedigeAn ancient stone image house a short detour off the main road.
  • Dambulla Cave TemplePainted cave shrines, a natural stop shortly before Sigiriya.

The drive, step by step

Leaving Kandy, the road heads north through Katugastota and Matale, with spice gardens along the roadside. Beyond Matale, the land flattens and dries as you enter the Cultural Triangle. The road reaches Dambulla, where the cave temple is right beside the highway, and then turns east for the last stretch to Sigiriya.

Expect the drive to take around two and a half to three hours without stops, longer if you visit Dambulla or a spice garden.

Where to stay at the other end

Stay in Sigiriya village to be close to the rock, or around Dambulla, Habarana or Kandalama. Two or three nights in the area lets you see Sigiriya, Dambulla, Polonnaruwa and an elephant safari without changing hotels.

Tips for this journey

  • Leave Kandy early if you want to climb Sigiriya the same day; the rock is hottest at midday.
  • If you take the bus, ask for the Dambulla bus at the Goods Shed bus stand and change at Dambulla for Sigiriya.
  • Stay at least one night near Sigiriya to climb early and add Pidurangala, Polonnaruwa or an elephant safari.
