Cultural Triangle
Minneriya National Park surrounds an ancient reservoir in the Cultural Triangle. In the dry season, as the water retreats and fresh grass appears, large numbers of elephants gather on its shores in what is known as the Gathering.
Seeing dozens of elephants together, from calves to large bulls, is one of Sri Lanka's great wildlife sights.
It sits close to Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa, so an afternoon safari fits easily into a cultural itinerary.

Waterbirds, raptors and peacocks are common.
Minneriya National Park surrounds the ancient Minneriya reservoir, built by King Mahasena in the third century AD. The tank still irrigates the surrounding farmland, and the grasslands around it are one of the best places in Asia to see large numbers of elephants.
Alongside the elephants you may see water buffalo, deer, crocodiles, and birds such as painted storks and pelicans.
In the dry months, roughly from July to October, the water level in the reservoir falls and fresh grass grows on the exposed shore. Elephants travel from surrounding forests to feed and drink, and herds can gather in very large numbers. Local guides call this the Gathering.
Numbers vary from year to year and week to week, and elephants also move between Minneriya, Kaudulla and Hurulu Eco Park. Jeep drivers keep track of where the herds are, so stay flexible about which park you visit.
Afternoon safaris are popular, as elephants come out onto the grasslands later in the day. Minneriya is only around half an hour from Sigiriya and Habarana, so it fits easily into a Cultural Triangle stay.
Check current details before travelling: prices, opening hours, access and seasonal conditions change.
Usually in the later dry season, often around July to September, but it varies each year with rainfall.
Both are good; elephants move between them. A local driver will know which is best that week.
