Anuradhapura
The first great capital, with giant white stupas and a sacred Bodhi tree still at its heart.
North West
Wilpattu is Sri Lanka's largest national park, a wilderness of dry forest dotted with natural, sand-rimmed lakes known as villus. It sees far fewer vehicles than Yala.
The calm atmosphere and dense forest make each sighting feel earned, with leopards, sloth bears, elephants and deer among the residents.
It fits well into routes that include Anuradhapura or the north-west coast.
Natural lakes that attract wildlife and waterbirds.
Both live here; sightings are never guaranteed.
A quieter experience than the busiest parks.
Wilpattu, in the north-west, is Sri Lanka's largest national park. Its landscape is unusual: dense dry forest broken up by dozens of natural lakes called villus, which fill with rainwater and draw in wildlife.
The park is much quieter than Yala, and its leopards, sloth bears, elephants, deer and birdlife reward travellers who enjoy a slower, wilder safari.
Because the forest is thick, sightings come less often than in open parks, and the tracks between villus are long. A full-day safari gives you the best chance to explore deeper.
The trade-off is fewer jeeps and a more peaceful experience. When you do find a leopard, you may well have it to yourself.
Wilpattu's main entrance is a drive of a few hours from Negombo and the airport, and around an hour or so from Anuradhapura. That makes it a good first or last stop on a Cultural Triangle trip, or a pairing with the beaches and lagoon at Kalpitiya.
Lodges and camps just outside the park offer early starts.
Check current details before travelling: prices, opening hours, access and seasonal conditions change.
Yala has more varied habitat and more jeeps; Wilpattu is larger, quieter and denser. Both have leopards.
Not necessary, but the park's size means a full day can make a difference for wildlife enthusiasts.
Yes. They are close enough to combine on consecutive days.
Wilpattu is generally visited for much of the year. Rainfall and water levels affect where animals gather; check current park information.
Wilpattu is reached by road from Anuradhapura or the Puttalam side of the west coast.
