Quick answer
Our private Minneriya safari tour picks you up from your hotel in Sigiriya, Habarana or Dambulla and takes you on a three to four-hour jeep safari to see wild elephants, usually in the afternoon, when herds come out to graze on the grasslands around the ancient Minneriya tank. In the dry season, often from about July to October, large numbers of elephants can gather here, an event known as "the Gathering". If the elephants are in neighbouring Kaudulla or Hurulu Eco Park instead, your driver and tracker will take you there. Park entrance tickets are paid separately.

A jeep safari in Minneriya is one of the best wildlife experiences in Sri Lanka and one of the easiest to fit into a trip, because the park is only a short drive from Sigiriya. This page explains what happens on the tour, when to go, what's included and how to book.

What you will see
Wild elephants
Elephants are the reason most people come. They live in the forests around the park and come out onto the grasslands by the Minneriya tank to feed, drink and bathe, especially in the afternoon. You may see family herds with young calves, playing in the water or dusting themselves with soil.
The Gathering
In the dry season, as water sources elsewhere dry up, large numbers of elephants move to the shores of the Minneriya tank, where fresh grass grows as the water level drops. This is known as "the Gathering" and is one of the largest regular gatherings of Asian elephants in the world. Read more on our elephant Gathering page.
The Gathering has become less predictable in recent years. Since around 2019, changes in how the tank is filled have meant it is sometimes nearly full in the dry season, leaving less grassland, and elephants may gather elsewhere. That is why our drivers check recent sightings and choose the best park on the day.
Other wildlife
Look for spotted deer, sambar deer, toque macaques, grey langurs, water monitors and crocodiles. Minneriya is also excellent for birds, including painted storks, spot-billed pelicans, cormorants, eagles and kingfishers. See bird watching in Sri Lanka.
Minneriya, Kaudulla or Hurulu?
Three protected areas sit close together near Habarana, and the elephants move between them depending on water and grass:
- Minneriya National Park: the best known, around the ancient Minneriya tank, built by King Mahasen in the 3rd century AD.
- Kaudulla National Park: to the north, often the better choice when elephants move away from Minneriya.
- Hurulu Eco Park: a forest reserve near Habarana, often used when the elephants are there.
Each park has its own entrance ticket, so you visit one per safari. Your jeep driver will recommend the best park on the day, based on recent sightings. See where to see elephants in Sri Lanka.
What happens on the tour
1. Hotel pick-up
Your driver picks you up from your hotel in the early afternoon. From Sigiriya, the drive to the Minneriya entrance usually takes around 30 to 45 minutes.
2. Into the jeep
At the park, you switch to an open-top safari jeep with a local driver who knows the park well. Tickets are bought at the park office.
3. The safari
You spend about three hours in the park, driving along the tracks and out onto the grasslands by the tank. Your driver stops wherever there are animals, and you can take your time with each sighting.
4. Sunset and return
As the light softens, the elephants are often at their most active. You leave the park by closing time and are driven back to your hotel.
Morning safaris are also possible, but elephants are usually seen in larger numbers in the afternoon.

Safari etiquette
- Stay in the jeep at all times.
- Keep your voice low and don't play music.
- Give elephants space. Ask your driver to keep a respectful distance and never to block their path.
- Never feed animals or leave rubbish.
Read our responsible travel guide.
Combine it with your trip
A Minneriya safari fits easily into two or three days in the Cultural Triangle:
- Morning: climb Sigiriya Rock or Pidurangala Rock early, before the heat.
- Midday: rest at your hotel or visit the Dambulla Cave Temple.
- Afternoon: the Minneriya safari.
You can also combine it with Polonnaruwa, which is close to the park. See three days in the Cultural Triangle, our Sigiriya day tour, our wildlife tour and our safari guide.
Minneriya vs Yala and Udawalawe
- Minneriya: best for large herds of elephants, especially in the dry season. Easy to reach from Sigiriya.
- Yala: best for leopards. See our Yala safari tour.
- Udawalawe: excellent for elephants all year. See our Udawalawe safari tour.
Is it good for families?
Yes. Children usually love seeing elephants up close, and afternoon safaris avoid an early start. Jeeps can be bumpy and dusty, so bring water and a scarf. See Sri Lanka with kids and our family tour.
Morning or afternoon safari?
| Morning safari | Afternoon safari | |
|---|---|---|
| Typical time | From park opening, about 6 am | From about 2:30 pm until closing |
| Elephants | Often fewer on the open grassland | Usually the best chance of large herds |
| Light | Soft, cool and misty | Warm, golden light near sunset |
| Heat | Cooler | Hotter at the start, cooling later |
| Best for | Birds and a quiet park | Elephants and photography |
Most travellers choose the afternoon. If you're a keen bird watcher, or want to combine the safari with an afternoon at Polonnaruwa, a morning safari can work well.
Photography tips
- Bring a zoom lens. Elephants are often some distance away, and your driver should never get too close.
- Use the late light. The last hour before closing gives warm, golden light and dust glowing in the air.
- Rest your camera on the jeep frame or a small beanbag for steady shots.
- Look for small moments, such as calves playing, elephants dusting themselves, or birds riding on their backs.
- Protect your gear from dust with a cloth or bag between shots.
A note on elephant welfare
We choose jeep drivers who keep a respectful distance and don't crowd the animals. If too many jeeps gather around a herd, ask your driver to move on: there are usually other elephants nearby. Seeing elephants behaving naturally, without disturbance, is the best part of the experience.
Where to stay for a Minneriya safari
Sigiriya, Habarana and Dambulla are all good bases. Habarana is closest to the park entrances, while Sigiriya puts you near the rock and Pidurangala for an early climb. Many hotels in the area are set among forest and lakes, and you may see wildlife from your room. See our guide to where to stay in Sri Lanka.
A short history of Minneriya
The Minneriya tank is one of the great achievements of ancient Sri Lankan engineering. According to the chronicles, it was built by King Mahasen in the 3rd century AD to water the surrounding rice fields, and it is still used for irrigation today. The forests and grasslands around it became a sanctuary for wildlife and were declared a national park in 1997. On a safari, you are driving across a landscape that has been shaped by people and elephants for more than 1,700 years.
How to choose a good safari
Not all safaris are the same. When you book, it is worth asking:
- Who chooses the park? A good driver checks recent sightings before deciding between Minneriya, Kaudulla and Hurulu.
- Is the jeep private? A private jeep means you can stay longer at the sightings you enjoy.
- What exactly is included? Ask whether park tickets, the jeep and hotel transfers are in the price.
- How do the drivers behave around elephants? Good drivers keep their distance and switch off the engine.
Every safari we arrange is private, and we tell you clearly what is included in your quote.
A sample day with a Minneriya safari
- 5:45 am: climb Pidurangala Rock for sunrise.
- 8:00 am: breakfast back at your hotel.
- 9:30 am: visit the Dambulla Cave Temple, or rest by the pool.
- 12:30 pm: a rice and curry lunch.
- 1:45 pm: your driver picks you up for the safari.
- 2:30 pm: enter the park and start the jeep safari.
- 6:00 pm: leave the park as the light fades.
- 6:45 pm: back at your hotel for dinner.
This plan keeps the hottest hours free and puts you in the park when the elephants are most active.
Can I combine Minneriya with Polonnaruwa?
Yes, and it's one of the best days in the Cultural Triangle. Explore the ancient city of Polonnaruwa in the morning, when it is cooler, with its royal palace, stone Buddhas at Gal Vihara and quiet ruins among the trees. After lunch, drive to Minneriya, about 30 minutes away, for the afternoon safari. Your driver will time the day so you reach the park when the elephants come out. See Polonnaruwa.
