Sri Lanka and Bali often end up on the same shortlist: tropical, spiritual, great value and beautiful. They're very different holidays, though. Here's an honest comparison to help you choose.
Culture and history
Bali's Hindu culture is woven into daily life, with offerings, temple ceremonies and rice terraces. Sri Lanka offers more than two thousand years of recorded history: ancient capitals, the Sigiriya rock fortress, cave temples and the sacred city of Kandy, with eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites on one island.
Wildlife
This is Sri Lanka's big advantage. You can see wild elephants, leopards, sloth bears, crocodiles and blue whales, often within a few days of each other. Bali has lovely nature and marine life but no comparable safari experience.
Scenery and variety
Both are lush and green. Sri Lanka adds misty tea country and cool mountains above 2,000 metres, scenic train rides and big waterfalls, so a single trip can feel like three holidays in one.
Beaches and surf
Both have excellent surf. Sri Lanka has long, often quieter beaches on two coasts with opposite seasons, so there's usually somewhere in season. Bali's beaches are busier but well developed.
Getting around
Bali is small but traffic can be slow. Sri Lanka is larger, and most visitors travel with a private driver; journeys between regions take a few hours but are part of the experience.
Food
Bali has a huge international café scene. Sri Lanka's food is bolder and more local: rice and curry with many dishes, hoppers, kottu and fresh seafood.
Which should you choose?
Choose Bali for a social, café-and-villa holiday close to Australia and Southeast Asia. Choose Sri Lanka if you want variety in one trip (ancient history, wildlife safaris, tea country and beaches) with fewer crowds, planned around you with a private driver.
