Hiriketiya is a small bay just east of Dickwella town, on the stretch of south coast between Matara and Tangalle. Until recently it was a quiet local beach; today it is known for its horseshoe curve of sand, leaning palms and easygoing surf.
The village behind the beach has grown a small scene of cafés, yoga spaces and guesthouses, while the bay itself remains compact and walkable.
The bay's beach break is forgiving enough for beginners, and several spots along the sand hire boards and offer lessons. More experienced surfers sometimes use the point at the edge of the bay, or head to breaks along the coast towards Midigama and Ahangama.
Inside the bay, swimming is usually pleasant in the calm season. The best surf and swimming conditions on this coast are roughly November to April.
Hiriketiya has boutique guesthouses, surf lodges and small villas tucked among the palms behind the beach. Dickwella next door offers simpler guesthouses, and Tangalle, further east, has larger resorts.
