Ayurveda in Sri Lanka

Ayurveda, the traditional system of medicine from South Asia, is widely practised in Sri Lanka, and many visitors come specifically for a retreat. If you're new to it, here's what to expect and how to choose.

What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda aims to restore balance in body and mind through diet, herbal preparations, massage and treatments, rest and lifestyle. In Sri Lanka it sits alongside traditional local medicine, and many families still use herbal remedies at home.

What a programme involves

Most programmes begin with a consultation with an Ayurvedic doctor, who recommends treatments and a diet suited to you. Typical treatments include oil massages, herbal steam baths, and shirodhara, a steady stream of warm oil poured over the forehead. Days are often combined with yoga, meditation and plenty of rest.

How long should you stay?

A few treatments can be enjoyed on any trip, but a full programme usually works best over one to three weeks. Many retreats recommend at least a week for noticeable benefits.

Choosing a retreat

  • Look for qualified doctors and therapists, and clear information about programmes.
  • Decide between a beach setting (often the south and west coasts) and the cooler hills.
  • Ask about diet, daily schedule and whether alcohol is allowed.
  • Read independent reviews.
  • If you have health conditions or take medication, speak to your own doctor first.

Combine wellness with sightseeing

Many travellers tour first, then end with a week of Ayurveda. Others add gentle extras: tea-country walks, the botanical gardens at Peradeniya, a spice garden or birdwatching in the rainforest.
