Nuwara Eliya, often called "Little England", sits at about 1,900 metres among rolling tea estates, with cool air, colonial buildings and flower-filled gardens. Its sights are spread around the town and the surrounding hills, so a private driver makes it easy to see them in a day. This page explains the tour, a sample day and what's included.

A walk through the tea estates
Walk along the narrow paths between the tea bushes and, if work is underway, see the tea pluckers at work. Please ask before taking photos.
Gregory Lake
A pretty lake on the edge of town, with walking paths, boat rides and pony rides for children. It's lovely in the early morning or late afternoon.
Victoria Park
A well-kept park in the town centre with flower beds, old trees and many birds. It's especially colourful around April.
The colonial town centre
Nuwara Eliya grew as a cool retreat for British tea planters and officials, and you can still see that history in its buildings, including the red-brick post office, the old hotels and the clubhouse of the golf course.
Hakgala Botanical Garden
On the road towards Welimada, Hakgala is a hillside botanical garden with rose gardens, ferns, orchids and old trees, set below a dramatic rock. It's about 30 minutes from town.
Seetha Amman Temple
Close to Hakgala, the colourful Seetha Amman Temple at Seetha Eliya is linked to the Ramayana story, where Sita is said to have been held. See our Ramayana trail guide and Ramayana tour.
Lover's Leap waterfall
A short walk through tea estates leads to Lover's Leap, a tall waterfall above the town with views over the valley.

A little history
Nuwara Eliya, meaning "city on the plain" or "city of light" in Sinhala, was a quiet highland area until the 19th century, when British settlers developed it as a cool retreat from the heat of the lowlands. Tea planting spread across the surrounding hills, and the town gained its race course, golf course, colonial hotels and English-style gardens. Today, it's still the heart of Sri Lanka's high-grown tea country, producing some of the island's most delicate teas.
Tea from Nuwara Eliya
Tea grown at high altitude, like the tea from Nuwara Eliya, is often light, bright and fragrant. On a factory tour, you'll learn the difference between grades such as BOP and Pekoe, and how the same leaf can become many different teas. Buying tea at the factory shop is a lovely souvenir and supports the estate. See our tea country guide.
Combine the tour with the train
A popular plan is to spend a morning on this tour, then take the scenic afternoon train from Nanu Oya towards Ella, if the timetable allows. Your driver takes your luggage by road and meets you in Ella. You see the best of Nuwara Eliya and ride the most beautiful part of the railway on the same day. See Ella to Nuwara Eliya, which covers the same journey in the other direction.
Horton Plains: what to know
Horton Plains is a high plateau of grassland and cloud forest, part of the Central Highlands World Heritage Site. The World's End walk is about 9 km and takes around three hours. The park opens early, and the best views from World's End are before about 10 am. Bring warm clothes, as it can be very cold at dawn, and expect a bag check at the entrance, as plastic is restricted. See our Horton Plains guide.
Private tour or on your own?
You can visit Nuwara Eliya's sights by tuk-tuk, but they're spread out across the hills, and some, like Hakgala and the Seetha Amman Temple, are 30 minutes from town. With a private driver, you move easily between them, keep warm clothes and shopping in the car, and change the plan if the weather turns.
Where to stay in Nuwara Eliya
Stay in a colonial-style hotel near the town centre for easy walks to Gregory Lake and Victoria Park, or in a tea estate bungalow in the hills for peace and views. Rooms with heating or extra blankets are worth looking for, as nights can be cold. Book early in April, when the town is busiest. See where to stay in Sri Lanka.
Rainy day plan
If it rains, your driver can switch to the indoor and sheltered sights: a tea factory tour and tasting, the colonial hotels for afternoon tea, the Seetha Amman Temple and the town's markets. The gardens and lake are still lovely in light rain, with fewer visitors. See Sri Lanka rainy season.
Photography tips
The best light in the hills is early morning and late afternoon. Look for tea pluckers on the slopes, rows of bushes curving over the hills, and mist lifting from the valleys. Gregory Lake is beautiful at sunset, and the gardens at Hakgala are best on a bright morning.
Tip: if you only have half a day, choose the tea factory, Gregory Lake and the town centre, which are all close together.
Tip: bring a small bag for tea and fresh strawberries bought along the way.
