Colombo to Sigiriya: How to Get There

Quick answer

The easiest way to get from Colombo or the airport to Sigiriya is by private car, which usually takes about three and a half to four and a half hours, partly on the Central Expressway. There is no railway station at Sigiriya: the nearest is Habarana, about 15 km away, and the train from Colombo Fort takes around four and a half hours. Buses are cheapest but slowest, usually around five to six hours, with a final tuk-tuk ride from the main road.

Journey times are approximate and depend on traffic, the time of day and your starting point.

By private car: the most popular choice

Most travellers going from Colombo to Sigiriya travel by private car, especially on the day they arrive. Your driver can meet you at the airport or your Colombo hotel and drop you at your hotel near Sigiriya.

The route

From Bandaranaike International Airport, the drive goes inland and joins the Central Expressway for part of the way, which avoids some of the busiest town traffic. The road then continues north through Kurunegala and Dambulla towards Sigiriya. From central Colombo, add extra time for city traffic, especially in the morning and evening rush hours.

Why choose a private car?

  • It is the fastest door-to-door option for most travellers
  • You can start straight from the airport after a long flight
  • Your luggage stays with you
  • You can stop for lunch, a temple visit or a rest whenever you like

You can book this as a single transfer, or as the first day of a trip with a private driver.

Stops on the way to Sigiriya

Kurunegala

The town of Kurunegala sits below large rock outcrops, one of which is known as Elephant Rock because of its shape. A temple and viewpoint on the rock look out over the town and lake. It makes a good stop to stretch your legs.

Dambulla cave temple

The Dambulla cave temple is only a short drive from Sigiriya, so many travellers visit it on the way. Its five caves are filled with Buddha statues and painted ceilings. If you arrive in the afternoon, it is a perfect first sight.

Pidurangala rock at sunset

If you arrive in Sigiriya with time to spare, climb Pidurangala rock for a sunset view of Sigiriya. It is a short but steep climb with a scramble near the top. Read Sigiriya vs Pidurangala to decide which to climb.

By train: the scenic but slower option

There is no railway station in Sigiriya. The nearest station is Habarana, on the line that runs from Colombo towards Trincomalee and Batticaloa.

  1. Colombo Fort to Habarana: take the train from Colombo Fort station. The journey takes around four and a half hours. There are only a few trains a day on this line, so check the current timetable.
  2. Habarana to Sigiriya: take a taxi or tuk-tuk for the last stretch of about 15 km, which takes around 25 minutes.

Trains can be busy, and unreserved carriages may mean standing. Reserved seats are more comfortable if they are available. The train is a good choice if you enjoy rail travel and have light luggage, but for most travellers a car is quicker and easier.

By bus: the cheapest option

There is no direct public bus to Sigiriya village from Colombo. The usual way is:

  1. Colombo to the Dambulla area: take an air-conditioned intercity bus from central Colombo heading north towards Dambulla, Anuradhapura or Trincomalee. Ask the conductor to let you off at the junction nearest Sigiriya, or at Dambulla.
  2. To Sigiriya: take a tuk-tuk or a local bus for the last part of the journey.

The whole trip usually takes around five to six hours. Air-conditioned buses are much more comfortable than ordinary buses on a journey this long. Buses can be crowded and luggage space is limited.

By domestic flight

Domestic air-taxi flights have operated between Colombo and the Sigiriya area, offering a short flight instead of a long drive. Schedules change and services are limited, so check current availability before you plan around a flight. A flight can be useful if you are very short on time, but most travellers find the road journey easy and far cheaper.

From the airport or from Colombo city?

Many travellers go straight from the airport to Sigiriya on their first day, rather than staying in Colombo. This saves time, as the airport is north of the city and closer to the Cultural Triangle. If you arrive late at night, consider spending your first night near the airport in Negombo and driving to Sigiriya the next morning. If you want to see Colombo, our one day in Colombo guide and Colombo city tour can help.

When to travel

You can travel to Sigiriya all year round. Sigiriya lies in Sri Lanka's dry zone, and the weather is often good when the south-west coast is rainy. Whatever the season, plan to climb the rock early in the morning, when it is cooler and quieter. Read our guide to the best time to visit Sri Lanka.

On the road, try to avoid leaving Colombo during the morning and evening rush hours, as city traffic can add a lot of time.

What to do in Sigiriya

Sigiriya is the heart of Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle. Once you arrive, you can:

Travel tips

  • Start early to avoid traffic and arrive in daylight.
  • Book the airport pick-up in advance so your driver is waiting when you land.
  • Carry some cash for entrance tickets and small stops. See money in Sri Lanka.
  • Check entry fees for Sigiriya and Dambulla in our entry fees guide.
  • Get a local SIM so you can stay in touch with your driver. See our SIM card guide.

Continuing your journey

From Sigiriya, most travellers continue south to Kandy. See our guide to getting from Kandy to Sigiriya, which covers the same road in the other direction. Others head east to the beaches of Trincomalee or north to Anuradhapura.

Where to stay in Sigiriya

The Sigiriya area has a wide range of hotels, from simple family-run guesthouses in the village to boutique hotels and resorts set among forests and lakes. Staying close to the rock makes an early climb easy. If you prefer a busier town, Dambulla and Habarana are also good bases and are close to the national parks. Our guide to where to stay in Sri Lanka explains the options for the whole Cultural Triangle.

Arriving after a long flight

If you are driving straight from the airport after a long-haul flight, a few small things make the journey easier:

  • Ask your driver to stop for a coffee or a light meal after the first hour or so.
  • Keep water and snacks in the car.
  • If you arrive at night, consider staying near the airport and driving to Sigiriya the next morning, when you can enjoy the countryside.
  • Change some money or use an ATM at the airport before you set off.
  • Let us know your flight number so your driver can track any delays.

What affects the cost of the journey

The cost of a private transfer depends on the size of the vehicle, your starting point, any stops you add and the season. If you travel with one of our drivers for your whole trip, this journey is simply your first day. Ask us for a quote that includes everything.

City pickup and airport pickup are different journeys

Colombo city hotels and Bandaranaike International Airport have different starting locations. Share the exact pickup address instead of requesting a generic “Colombo transfer”. Airport travel also involves immigration and baggage collection before you reach the vehicle. A landing time is not a departure time for the road journey.

If using public transport, check the actual train destination and onward road connection. Sigiriya has no direct railway arrival at the rock fortress. A bus towards Dambulla also needs a final local transfer. Confirm the station or bus stop, luggage arrangements and hotel location; do not base a tight sightseeing booking on a single timetable estimate.

What to include in a transfer quote request

Give the exact travel date, pickup and drop-off addresses, number of passengers and luggage. If you need a child seat, extra space, an accessible vehicle or a surfboard carrying arrangement, ask specifically and wait for confirmation. State whether you want a direct transfer, sightseeing stops or several days of driver hire; these are different services and need different quotes.

Ask whether fuel, tolls, parking, agreed waiting time and any additional stops are included, without assuming a universal policy. Site tickets, safari jeeps and guided visits are separate unless listed. For an airport connection, share the flight number and airline check-in requirements and allow an appropriate buffer. Driving times are planning estimates affected by traffic, weather, stops and the final hotel location.
