Sri Lanka SIM Card for Tourists

Staying connected in Sri Lanka is easy and makes everything simpler, from maps and ride-hailing apps to WhatsApp with your driver. Here's how to get online on arrival.

Buy at the airport

Mobile network counters in the arrivals area at Bandaranaike International Airport sell tourist SIM packages. Bring your passport, as it's required for registration. Staff will usually install and activate the SIM for you.

The main networks

The main mobile networks are Dialog, SLT-Mobitel and Hutch. Coverage is good in towns and along main roads, with weaker signal in remote parks, forests and some hill-country valleys.

SIM or eSIM?

If your phone supports eSIM, you can buy a travel eSIM before you fly and be connected on landing. A local SIM often gives more data for your money and a local number for calls. Either works well for most travellers.

Tips for staying connected

  • Make sure your phone is unlocked before you travel.
  • Download offline maps for areas with weaker signal.
  • Save your driver's and your agency's WhatsApp numbers.
  • Wi-Fi is common in hotels and cafés, but speeds vary.
