Quick answer

A village tour is a half-day or full-day visit to a rural community, usually around Sigiriya, Habarana or Dambulla. You ride a bullock cart, cross a village lake by traditional boat, walk through paddy fields and home gardens, meet farmers and craftspeople, and cook and eat a traditional lunch with a village family. With Vacation Ceylon Tours it's private, with your own driver, and fits easily alongside Sigiriya or an elephant safari.

Why go

The most memorable day in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka's ancient cities are spectacular, but the island's heart beats in its villages. For thousands of years, rural life in the dry zone has been built around the wewa (the village tank, or reservoir), the paddy field and the temple: "wewai, dagabai, gamai, pansalai". Farmers still plough with buffalo in places, women still cook in clay pots over wood fires, and families still share rice and curry from lotus leaves.

A village tour isn't a show or a museum. You meet real families, eat food grown a few steps from the kitchen, and see how people actually live. For many guests, it's the moment Sri Lanka feels personal.

We're a local, Colombo-based team running private tours in our own vehicles, so your village tour is never a crowded bus trip. Your driver brings you there, village hosts guide you through, and you go at your own pace.

Your day, step by step
