One Day in Colombo

Many travellers rush straight out of Colombo, but a day in the capital shows a different side of Sri Lanka: temples and mosques, colourful bazaars, colonial buildings and a seafront promenade at sunset. Here's a one-day plan.

Morning: temples

Start at Gangaramaya, an eclectic Buddhist temple near Beira Lake filled with statues and treasures. Walk across to Seema Malaka, a serene meditation pavilion on the lake designed by Geoffrey Bawa.

Late morning: Pettah markets

Dive into Pettah's bustling bazaars, where each street specialises in something different: spices, fabrics, electronics or fruit. Don't miss the striking red-and-white Jami Ul-Alfar mosque.

Afternoon: colonial Colombo

Visit the restored Dutch Hospital shopping arcade in the Fort district, then see Independence Square, or spend time at the National Museum for an overview of Sri Lankan history and art.

Sunset: Galle Face Green

End the day at Galle Face Green, where families fly kites by the sea and street-food stalls fire up at dusk. Try isso vadai (prawn fritters) and finish with dinner at one of the city's excellent restaurants.

Tips

  • Traffic can be heavy, so plan sightseeing in a loop.
  • Dress modestly for temples and the mosque.
  • Tuk-tuks and ride-hailing apps are easy for short trips.
  • The airport is north of the city, near Negombo, so allow time on departure day.
