The Esala Perahera in Kandy is Sri Lanka's most spectacular festival: night after night of drummers, dancers, fire-twirlers, torch-bearers and decorated elephants parading through the streets in honour of the Sacred Tooth Relic. If your dates line up, it's an unforgettable experience.
What is the Esala Perahera?
Perahera means 'procession'. The Kandy Esala Perahera honours the Sacred Tooth Relic kept at the Temple of the Tooth, and also the island's guardian deities. One elephant carries a replica of the relic casket under a canopy, surrounded by dancers and drummers. The tradition goes back centuries and reflects Kandy's royal past.
When does it take place?
The festival is held over about ten days in the Sinhalese month of Esala, usually in July or August, ending on the full moon. The processions grow larger each night, and the final nights are the grandest and busiest. Exact dates follow the lunar calendar, so check them as soon as they're announced.
Where to watch
The procession follows a route through central Kandy around the temple and the lake. Seats in stands and on balconies along the route are sold in advance and are the most comfortable way to watch. Arrive early, as roads close and crowds are huge.
Planning tips
- Book accommodation in Kandy very early; hotels fill up and rates rise.
- Arrange your seats in advance and confirm the location.
- Plan to stay at least two nights so you're not rushing.
- Expect road closures and heavy traffic; we'll plan pick-up points around them.
- Bring water, a cushion and patience: processions can last for hours.
Etiquette
The Perahera is a religious event. Dress modestly, stay seated during the procession, don't use flash photography close to the elephants, and follow instructions from officials.
Combine it with your trip
July and August are also a good time for the Cultural Triangle, the elephant gathering at Minneriya and the east coast beaches, so the festival fits naturally into a summer route.
